This is handmade washi. There are 30 sheets. All have a unique design. They measure 6 x 6 cm or x 2.36 x 2.36 inches. Chiyogami has a long past but today the decorative patterns are silkscreened onto machinemade sheets of paper that is a mix of kozo ( a deciduous tree indigenous to Shikoku and Kyushu Islands in Japan) and sulphite (sulphite is used to keep the price reasonable). To create 1 piece of gorgeous chiyogami, a sheet of paper is silkscreened by hand with each individual color. Between applications of color, the sheets are dried on racks. You can imagine how time consuming and difficult it must be to line up each color in relation to the pattern! The Japanese samurai were the military retainers of a daimyo. And finally you may have heard of ronin. Ronin are samurai without a master. This is what happened to the 47 Ronin in the famous story of Chushingura after their lord was forced to commit suicide. According to historians the fierce fights between hostile clans and war lords was mainly a battle for land. Only 20 percent of Japan's rugged and mountainous area can be used for agriculture.
