And each featurette begins with the same segment stating how, after Russia's 1917 revolution, "Lenin proclaimed cinema the most important art for promoting Communist ideology," so animated films were used to spread the Communist Party's version of the past and its vision for the future. Unfortunately, that facile summary—the set's only explanation for many of its dozens of shorts—seems to imply that they all share a common history and origin, which does their scope and variety little service. But the failure to delve deeper into individual pieces is virtually the only flaw in a fascinating set where every installment comes freighted with political and historical significance. This is the famous James Brown concert that was broadcast in Boston, Massachusetts less than 24 hours after the assignation of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. As violence was breaking out across America, Boston mayor Kevin White was considering canceling all public events, including the James Brown concert. Civil leaders advised White that canceling the concert might trigger a riot. The mayor relented and then persuaded the TV station to broadcast the event in an effort to keep blacks at home instead of on the street. James Brown soothed the grieving audience by dedicating the show to the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and delivered and electrifying performance. The book is a real eye-opener, exploding many myths about what it takes to make a team successful. "Peopleware" is a classic work in its field, and is an easy read - not too long, clearly and engagingly written, relies on well-told anecdotes based on the author's own experiences, and is solidly packed with practical and useful advice. Tables, facts and charts supporting the book's themes are well presented, and the authors are careful to not go beyond what the facts support. In general, I am interested in history and how thoughts and cultural assumptions develop. Since I am also interested in the evolution vs. creation debate, this book was a goldmine for me, learning how Christian scientists responded to Darwin in the nineteenth century, continuing from there all the way up to the time this book was written in the early 1990s. It was fascinating to learn how the response to evolution has changed through the years, not only from scientists, but the book even gives some glimpses into the responses of the laity. (12/01/06) I've only had this book for a day or so, and I haven't even thought about reading it from start to finish, but it is pretty gosh darn funny. At the end of the book, the author (Niroyuki Nishigaki) thanks everyone for "finishing reading what I have written in bad English." Bad English indeed! I'll share one of my favorite lines with you and if you think it's funny, I suggest you purchase this book. "Besides shooting out a big blank from your buttock, you can feel as if your root chakra leaked sweet hot mucus." That line doesn't make any sense, but it's pretty great. It joins Bob Woodward's "Bush at War" and the more detailed James Risen's "State of War" as core references. This book specifically and clearly documents three facts: 1) Vice President Cheney is impeachable for dereliction of duty and obstruction of due process in government as well as many violations of international and domestic law. While I do not see the President as quite the puppet some represent him to be, he is certainly childish and petulant and angry at his father (page 107: "I'm not going to be supportive of my father and all his Arab buddies.")
