Much less dance-oriented than her brother Daniel`s records, Natasha Bedingfield`s impressive debut album is closer to a UK version of Kelly Clarkson`s similarly masterful sophomore release, BREAKAWAY. Although UNWRITTEN unashamedly has its roots in mainstream chart pop--it`s only degrees away from the likes of Jessica and Ashlee Simpson--Bedingfield`s strong vocals (alternately flirty and commanding) and personal, quirky lyrics turn songs like "Single" and the title track into frothy but substantial gems, while the soaring opener "These Words" could well be the perfect summer single. Throughout, the production is pleasantly gimmicky, with neat touches like the slide guitar and echoed vocals in the intro of "Silent Movie," and most importantly, the songs don`t sound like they`ve had all the personality focus-grouped out of them in the manner of so many similar records. But there was also a more than a whiff of radical chic to the whole thing, of an art school student howling agitprop in a small bedroom studio. More than happy to trade on the mystique of her Tamil Tiger dad (who was barely a presence in her life as a British-born child of Sri Lankan refugees) and the retro-frisson of the P.L.O., Maya Arulpragasam indeed presented bangin' beats. But she sure was pretentious about it. Kala, named for her mom, seems to continue the messaging, with M.I.A. cast as a neo-Angela Davis on the lurid cover. I'm a fan of all types of hip-hop. my favorites are lyrical and production masterpieces like the wu-tang clan and mobb deep, but I listen to everything from the roots and epmd to three 6 mafia and lil' wayne. that being said, I'm not biased towards alternative hip-hop at all. in fact, I find most of it to be boring and lame, as it's usually the same old lyrics over beats that sound like they were made in 85 about how the current state of hip-hop songs is bad. but let me tell you, mos def on "black on both sides" shows that he is one of the best lyricists to hit rap. after one of my personal favorites "black star" with talib kweli produced the year before, mos def came on the solo tip with an album on the same level as "black star". the lyrics are intelligent, the beats make you feel good and the music as a whole is just perfect. there are many top tracks on this album, such as the collabs with talib and the popular "ms. fat booty", but my favorite is the dj premier produced... The College Dropout was one of the most anticipated debuts of the early 2000s, while Late Registration had people wondering why Kanye would feel the need to work so extensively with multi-instrumentalist rock producer Jon Brion (the J Dilla of the chamberlin) and whether or not Kanye's hubristic tendencies would get the better of it. With Graduation, there was Takashi Murakami's artwork, a silly first-week sales competition with the decreasingly relevant 50 Cent, and chatter about synthesizers running wild. That was about it, but it all seemed loud and prevalent, due in part to a lack of high-profile rap albums released in 2007. Words and Sounds, Vol. 1. They both told me that I would like the CD and I wouldn't skip a track at all. I am glad that I followed their advice because Jill's debut was one of the best CDs that I had heard in a long time. My favorite tracks ended up being "Do You Remember", "Slowly Surely", "The Way", "A Long Walk" and "Love Rain". I was impressed with the way Jill mixed in her singing with spoken word tracks and I was also impressed by the production. 1 year later, in 2001, Jill releasedExperience: Jill Scott. "Experience" was a 2 CD set of songs. Disc 1 was a Live CD which featured 9 tracks that were on her debut CD and Disc 2 contained 6 unreleased studio tracks. Lest you think Jamie Foxx is simply capitalizing on his Oscar-winning turn in Ray, don't forget that Unpredictable is actually a follow-up (albeit 11 years later) to his 1994 debut, Peep This. In fact, Unpredictable even sounds like a slow jams album from the '90s; despite featuring guests like Snoop, Kanye West, and The Game, Foxx isn't trying to out-club Ciara or Amerie with a series of hip-hop-flavored tracks. Instead, he relies on getting his croon on with tried-and-true R&B balladry. Unpredictable actually gets rather predictable over the course of 15 songs, too many of which begin to meld into one another. But on the best songs, like the sublimely acoustic "Heaven" and his duet with Mary J Blige ("Love Changes"), Foxx reminds you that he has been singing just as long as he's been acting; this is no Jamie-Come-Lately. --Oliver Wang See less

Twins Brandon and Brian Casey, heart and soul of Jagged Edge, have got a good thing going: What artist wouldn't want to clone himself in the name of tight harmonies and flow that's DNA-deep? Jagged Edge, the brothers' fifth outing with bandmates Kyle Norman and Richard Wingo, finds them tight as ever, only in a slightly raunchier mood than we're accustomed to (were previous Jagged titles plastered with "EXPLICIT" stickers?). All the standard seductions expected of smooth R&B operators sit in a mid-disc, mid-tempo clump--"Get a Lil' Bit of This" begets the moaner that is "Crying Out," which begets the tender "Good Luck Charm"--and padding them on either side are a handful of songs on which the word "lovin'" could be rhymed with "hotter than an oven" interchangeably. "Watch You" paints a lusty post-shower scene, the title of "Baby Feel Me" is to be taken literally, and "A** Hypnotic" pretty much speaks for itself. James Blunt makes a great CD. His songs seem to be real-life occurrences; I think that's what makes his songs easy to relate to for most people. James Blunt is going to be a big name artist. I can't put my finger on what it is, but whatever it is, he has it. His sound is so diverse, he is very soulful and moody, and cries out for comfort. he has a tenor voice but he is not so high that he sounds like a woman. He doesn't have the best of voices, but it is good enough. I think the reason I like his songs is because I think I can sing as well as he can, and the songs aren't difficult to sing. His songs are also easy to play on guitar, and on piano. Every song on his CD is special, you never feel like you are listening to the same song over and over again. His songs have a soft but rugged sound to them, actually his instrumental is the soft part and his vocals are the rugged part, he has the perfect mix of the two sounds. My favorite song on the CD is "Tears and Rain," it tells about how... See less
