(10/23/07) I have been an admirer of Ursula Hegi since her brilliant "Stones from the River." This current work fails in many respects and is a grave disappointment. The general plot is simple. Three people grow up together (two males and one female) who love each other. Two marry leaving the third in an awkward position and places strain on their mutual relationships. Added to this is the woman (Anna) loses her parents the day of her wedding and her mother was pregnant with Opal, who is miraculously delivered moments before her mother's death, to become Anna's sister/daughter. Anna and Opal's mother was a German immigrant whose friend becomes an "aunt/mother" to Anna after he husband hangs himself over his inability to deal with and resolve the conflicts of the four way relationship of the protagonists. Hegi had some good material to work with. However, she chose a complicated literary technique of fragmented memories, imposed upon by memories of things the deceased husband (Mason) says and does...See less

(10/22/07) Grow Your Very Own Desert When we saw this kit we just about freaked. Grow your own desserts? What could be more wonderful than that? Ty planned a Donut Farm; Willie wanted to grow some Twinkie Trees; and Fraize couldn't wait to plant a Cheesecake Bush. Then someone told us that we actually had a kit to grow a d-e-s-e-r-t, not a d-e-s-s-e-r-t (apparently that extra "s" really makes a difference). We all felt pretty silly, and don't tell anyone, but Ty cried a bit. Once we accepted reality, we realized how cool a desert was. There are cacti and weird-but-hip trees and scary animals. This kit leaves out the scary animals, so we all can enjoy the beauty and uniqueness of the desert without having to worry about scorpions, tarantulas, and whales. Within a week, you should be seeing sprouts. Since there are over 20 kinds of plants in the seed packets, it all depends on who wants to grow first - but all the seeds will germinate in 1-6 weeks. Because you are growing a desert, you rarely have...See less

(10/22/07) Pocket Plant Virtual pets are fun, but sometimes they can be a virtual pain in the virtual backside. You have to virtually feed them and virtually play with them. And yes, they virtually love you, but it's just not the same as real love. But one has to admit, most virtual pets are easy to carry around, whereas most real pets either won't fit in your pocket (like a dog) or wouldn't survive in your pocket (like a trout). We have the solution: the Mini Pet Cactus. The Mini Pet Cactus will love you unconditionally. All you have to do it is water it once a month for about a minute (instructions on packaging). Each cactus comes with a strap to attach to your jacket, cell phone, etc., so you can take it with you everywhere. Nothing says fun like talking to your cactus in a public place - until security asks you to leave, that is. Want to display your new pet at home or in the office? Try the Mini Pet Cactus Stand (sold separately). It has an adhesive back to attach to a wall, your monitor,...See less
