What he does remember in vivid detail is his life the year after his parents died and he missed his final exam in veterinary medicine at Cornell. He walked out of town, leaving everything behind him and jumped the first train that passed by. This one just happened to belong to the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth. His life in the circus was hard work, little or no pay, and a political structure that rivals any college campus. He falls in love with Marlena, who is married to the abusive animal trainer. He also falls in love with Rosie the elephant whounderstands Polish and is often the target of Marlena’s husband’s torturous abuse. This is one of the best books I’ve read in a very long time. I'm starting to think that I really would like to have a dress down day at work. heh. People 'dress down' on Fridays... Jeans, but dressed to the nines other than that. I so want a day to walk in with flip flops and a tee shirt. (and a skirt or something... not just flip flops and a shirt. that would be way too dressed down). *sigh* Anyway. I had changed my insurance to my new address today. I had to do that so I can register my car here so I can get a license (seems backwards, hm??) Anyway, I got the quote for the change, which was 300 bucks less than what I was paying. I said "Yay!" and accepted the quote. SO.. then I check the payment schedule and it shows that it's $30.00 more per month :/ wtf? So I call Geico and ask what's going on. Apparently if you're in NH you have a year policy, which lowers your monthly payment... See less

My nephew, Elliot, also has a birthday this month. He will be turning three on the 26th. Elliot likes to play outdoors whenever possible and, in the summer, he likes swimming and playing in the sprinkler, so I decided to make him a fun towel/wrap. It's supposed to be a shark, but I think it looks more like some kind of weird sea monster. The exterior body and dorsal fin are made from two inexpensive bath towels that I got at Target. The eye appliques are made from bits of terrycloth (cut from inexpensive washcloths). I wasn't sure about making the teeth from terrycloth, so I made them from white flannel. The entire thing is lined in very lightweight terrycloth in a darker blue. I should probably be glad I have my mother's sewing machine this week, because it has a really cool "auto tension" feature that was invaluable when sewing through are many as six layers of terrycloth at a time. Okay, so here's a new technic I've read about, in art books and online, but never tried before, until today. Today, our local book arts group met, which we do once a month, and this was the technic taught and tried. It was loads of fun, and actually quite addictive. We met for four hours of art fun and play, and when the four hours were up, I didn't want to stop playing and making cool backgrounds. Actually, these pieces could be framed as they are, and be great art. Or several framed as a set, and be great art. And like, who knew??? I sure didn't....until today. And am so glad I was introduced to this technic -- a very easy, simple, and cheap technic. Thank you so very much Laurie, for introducing me to this technic. It involved a recipe of water, dish soap, and tempera paint. We used wide mouth plastic cups for the paint, and basic straws with which to blow the bubbles. And then, once the bubbles are blown, you take your paper and touch it to them, and this is the amazing result. Not... See less

Which is funny — as I was adding things to my Amazon wish list over the months, I had no idea I was adding so many crochet books. Clearly, I’m into this. But what’s really funny is that of all the crafts I’ve ever tried, I’m worst at crochet. And yet, it’s soooooooooooo compelling. I love this book dearly. In true Japanese craft-book style, it takes cute (or kyuuuto, as the case may be) and makes it sophisticated. I love the look of lace crochet, and these projects, with their muted colors and simplicity, seem so modern. Maybe if I had one of these hook cases, I’d crochet better! Happy Monday! I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend! I know I sure did. DH & I took the kids to Toronto for the weekend. We went with my BF & her DH & Kiddies. It was great. Everyone got along really well, the girls were fantastic & we had an absolute blast. We went to the African Lion Safari the first day, and the Toronto Zoo the second day. I actually think everyone enjoyed the Safari more than the Zoo, but both were really fun. If you're not familiar with the Safari, basically, you ride around the path in your car, and the animals are running all around you! Here are some pics to share: My camera battery actually died the second day, so I didn’t get very many pictures at the zoo. But, BF was great and took just as many of my kids as she did of hers. In this month’s Metropolitan Home, I learned that noted architect , Jeffery Povero, who used to build many a library when working for Robert A.M. Stern, also knows a thing or two about making the most out of prevailing light. In order to make a room seem larger, Povero mirrored the window recesses, a way to take advantage of views and light. He also utilized opposing paint colors: Benjamin Moore’s Iron Mountain and white in the recesses to dematerialize at the edges.
