There are pictures and drawings and photographs that illustrate intersting points in history. There is basic information about how the archeologists have surmised what they know. The children and I have found it fascinating. It does once in a while touch on subjects that we discuss or skip over. It is so mild it is difficult to think of an example up front. However, the books is well worth the money and I would buy it again. It is educational, interesting, clearly written and concise yet it is not boring. (11/25/07) I am "testing" this out with my class of gifted fourth-graders, and they love it! They enjoy getting to know a little bit more each day about the kids at Horribly Hard Middle School as well as dream about going to Magic Middle School. What surprised me most was the vocabulary piece. The words are well chosen and well placed. Often I find "challenging" vocabulary to just be wacky- words that we don't hear in our everyday lives. This book, however, keeps the students' interest regarding strong, usable vocabulary. They WANT to look the words up in the dictionary so they have a better understanding of the story, the puns involved, or just to be the one to get to read from the dictionary. The very author revised and translated his own 1930's text before his death in 2002. It is for children but any adult with enjoy it immensely. We listened to a great it during a summer trip, children from 6 to 20 were enthralled. We love the way the author dealt with the Reformation, and the fact that is a whole chapter on the Counter-Reformation, which is largely ignored by the American public when studying European history. (10/10/07) This book takes a grammar and memorization intense approach to Latin. If this is not your thing, check out Minimus Pupil's Book: Starting out in Latin (Cambridge Latin Texts) or Lingua Latina: Pars I--Exercitia Latina I or Artes Latinae. If a grammar approach is what you want, this book explains the basic concepts of Latin well for younger students. I also think it's pacing (2 of 5 declensions, 3 tenses of verbs in 2 conjugations) is just right for first-time students. I'd have given this book 3 stars, except for the following caveat. Caveat: Make sure you get the revised edition (which I've not seen personally). There are lots and lots of errors in the *unrevised* edition. (06/10/07) Those are the noises my nephew, with some help from his father, was making with this kit after just a few minutes. We gave it to him for his 7th birthday and, though a bit young to go it alone at first, he is learning a lot and it is a great activity for him to enjoy with his parents, grandparents, etc. It's a great toy AND educational tool. He is at a stage where he wants to really figure out how things work and LOVES the kit and the oportunities for experimenting it offers. While I was driving home from his birthday party he called my cell phone to let me listen as he talked into it and his voice came out on the radio. It's a hit.
