There is a lot to like about this book. First of all, it has a very positive love message for fathers and sons, not all that common a theme in children's books. Secondly, the sort of "one-ups-man-ship" theme is on that naturally appeals to kids that age. The story itself is sweet without being cloying, and the illustrations are first rate. A great book for older pre-schoolers. As has been noted in many previous reviews, reading the book seems to stimulate a "how much do you love me" game with the kids and parents who read the book a lot. Given that the desire to be loved is one key need at this age group, a book that stimulates you to talk and play with your child in a way that distinctly communicates your love for him/her has got to be a good thing. But as hard as he resists the idea, poetry begins to seep into that empty brain. At first the works his teacher, Miss Stretchberry, introduces make little sense to him. "Why doesn't the person just/keep going if he's got/so many miles to go/before he sleeps?" I recently dug this book out from beneath a lot of my childhood stuff. My dad read it to me when I was just a little kid; at 18, I just reread it, and enjoyed it as much, if not more so--because now I could read between the lines. Thirty chapters. Each one is like a fable--an entertaining story, a nugget of truth woven into the fabric of each one. Peer pressure, politeness, standing up for yourself...sometimes the lessons are direct, sometimes they are subtle. Maybe kids won't understand them exactly, but they'll certainly remember the stories and remember the lessons thus. The story: There is something very wrong with Wayside School. It was built sideways--instead of one story with 30 rooms, is has 30 stories and one room per story. No nineteenth story, though, meaning that Miss Zarves, who teaches there, doesn't exist, either. At Wayside, students have the tendency to get turned into apples; those pesky dead rats, who live in the basement, are always trying to get into class;... See less

IF you like the Sherlock Holmes kind of mystery stuff, than you'll love this book. I liked this book so much because it's really easy to get into. It's lots of fun to read because you can try to solve the mysteries yourself. I learned how to be observant when trying to solve problems. I also learned to never give up, even when things aren't going your way, to stick through thing till the end. I rate this book a five, on a sclae from one to five. I gave "Trouble In Bugland" such a high rating because I found that this book kept me on the edge of my seat the whole way through. I also found it very interesting how Inspector Mantis solved his mysteries so accurately and he didn't stop trying to solve them until he found a solution to them. I recommend "Trouble In Bugland" to readers who like to solve mysteries and like to pick up a book and not putr it down until... See less
