We got ours at the Boston Children’s Museum — maybe you have something like that near you? I've moaned to several of you (Melissa) about how I do not like to sew clothes. I'm sure its because my former full time professional life was all about clothes. I was part designer (create the garment), part merchandiser (put it with other garments to form the line), part trend forecaster (hope that your hunch of designing and merchandising is right and that this line of clothes really will sell because you are making it all a year in advance, so who knows...). Relentlessly. It all seemed fleeting and quick. I'd say, "Geez, people...we make a line...then you want another line...then another"- all with a smile, of course, because I really did love it. I really did. But I think it turned my own creative pursuits to things with a little more longevity, like quilts. Supplies: #2 Pencil, ball-point ink pen, linoleum cutters, paper, ink pad and rubber printing block. 1. Draw your image onto a piece of paper with #2 pencil. When you are happy with your image, go over again with pencil to make sure the lines are strong and dark. If you want to do a very simple image, you can draw directly onto the rubber printing block with a pen and skip to step 4. 2. Now transfer this image onto the rubber printing block by putting image face down onto block and rub with pencil. You will have a backwards image. This is especially important when using images with words, letters or numbers. 3. Once the image has transferred, go over penciled lines with ink pen. This will give you a good image to carve around. 4. Now start carving using the smallest cutter (size 1) and carefully go around all the lines. Make sure you... See less

I have a basic recipe that I tweak depending on what meat I have left over, or for company I’ll use shrimp. * 1 cup rice, uncooked * 2 cups chicken broth * 1 TBSP olive oil * 1 lg onion diced * 1 bell pepper diced (optional until the price drops) * 2 cloves garlic * 2/3 lb sausage sliced (I use what’s on sale, smoked, kielbasa, or andouille. I use the leftover 1/3lb for the collards.) * 2 cups cooked and shredded chicken, turkey, or pork. (For shrimp I use 1lb peeled and deveined) * 2 cans diced tomatoes in sauce * 1/2 cup frozen peas * pepper/hot sauce to taste Cook the rice according to the package, substituting chicken broth for water and omitting salt and butter. A few people have asked me what pattern I used for making doll diapers, so I thought I'd make a pattern for you to download. I just traced a diaper that came with some doll of Keely's. I used two pieces of fabric to make ours, but next time I think I'll do a more realistic one out of white material and use a layer of batting in it to make it a little more substantial. So here is the basic shape of a finished one… and folded up… You can move where you put the velcro on the back of the front piece to achieve a different fit. Also, enlarge or reduce the pattern to fit whoever or whatever it's going on. See less

I really like having this arrangement with a small child, so that I can get something done in the kitchen while he plays, rather than having him off in the basement or something. It is the same color scheme as the adjoining rooms. I originally planned to have my father-in-law and husband make a play table based on a simple plywood one seen in Martha Stewart (Kids or Baby), and these rolling bins are the exact ones she showed in the magazine. But, as we started to move in here last year and I realized that we had a mountain of projects ahead of us, I found these great tables at CB2. They were called the Slim Coffee Table, and they were on sale, so bingo, I bought them. They have a silver base and a white enamel top. The coolest part is that the top of each of them slides open revealing storage inside. We keep some art supplies in... See less

I guess since Kristen blogged about it yesterday evening, it's safe to show you her new fabric project. Kristen and I have been dear blogging buddies for a long time and if you haven't visited her blog or website, you are missing out on some amazing inspiration. She designs her own fabrics, which she sells by the piece, and she also sews them into bags, pouches, dolls, etc. Not to mention the fact that she's starting to sell her dress designs in Australian shops, too. The fabric that I have from her is hands-down my favorite fabric in my stash. And knowing my nature, it will probably sit in my stash for awhile before I have the nerve to cut it up. Apparently, when Kristen saw my snow birds she was taken with them and decided to create a new fabric design based upon their chubby little profiles: I swiped this pic from her blog, so it's pretty blurry. There's a better picture here.... She's going to print it on a stone cotton or natural linen....and eventually it will be for sale on her... See less
