He appears in every photograph, acting as explorer, victim and conjurer performing actions that evoke a sense of ritual and metaphor, and frequently leave the viewer dazzled. His is a magical world, lightning strikes, huge flowers explode and clouds and dark holes spin across the horizon. This is a mystical world that recalls to me the world of the major arcana of the Tarot. The figure vacillates between Mage, Fool and Hierophant. Who is the Architect, I wonder. First, the photographer husbands clearly did not see their wives as the kind of woman professional that many of us think about today. Images of the women as competent adults outside of their family roles are rare here, even though the women include highly talented and intelligent individuals. (I cannot comment about all of them, because I have not read biographies of all, and the notes here are pretty brief about the wives.) Second, the husbands seem to go through an emotional evolution with regard to their wives. Initially, the images are idealized views of some "perfect" person in one way or other. Georgia O'Keeffe commented that the early photographs of her describe someone she never thought she was. From the text heavy French version to the oversized aperture reprint, Frank has continued to refine his work each time it appears in print. In the Scalo version, the place-name captions have been removed from the pages opposite the photographs and collected in the back of the book. Forget any ideas you might have of Frank's book being a travelogue. In place of the itinerary, the Scalo edition finally establishes the ORDER of the book's photographs as the crucial ingredient in Frank's complex vision of America. (12/18/06) This is one of my favorite portrait photography books. It's often profoundly disturbing, with such poignant images capturing girls on the verge of womanhood, offering us glimpses not only into the children that they were but into the lives they're going to lead as women, and it isn't all pretty. Sally Mann is wonderful at capturing the souls of those she photographs, often poor, rural-living individuals, full of pride and hopes and dreams. I have collected many of her books, and this has always been my favorite. It's very controversial - her work always has been - but if you look at it with your eye on that cusp of womanhood, you will see more than you ever dreamed. (12/18/06) Looking through the photographs in this volume, I feel so glad that Sally Mann's children had the freedom to just be themselves. You can see it in the pictures--nothing is "staged" or "put on," though you *will* see the kids playing at being grown up. Mostly, though, these are pictures of her children dressed and undressed, sprawled in the mud or playing games together or taking a nap. There are a few adult friends, but mostly these are photographs of the children. They are wonderful. You realize how precious this fleeting phase of life is, and given this opportunity, you can see that children possess their own kind of beauty. I think it's called 'innocence,' and it is one mode of freedom. It's a kind of freedom that seems endangered in this world, so a photographic record of this sort acts as a kind of testimony that childhood can indeed be carefree, natural, and happy. (12/18/06) Richard Avedon, reknown for his celebrity photgraphs, the toast of the tea and crumpets crowd, whose photos have illuminated the pages of New Yorker magazine for years... condescended enough to aim his camera at the "simple folk" of the American West. To find the "real" west -- to act in communion with his subjects. Is there anybody else who finds this just offensive beyond belief? Yes, many of the people who live in the West work hard, they get dirty, they get fat, they are not particularly happy. Not exactly news of the world. I despise this book. I think it is foul. I think the photographs so obviously represent a condescension it is really creepy. It is an ugly testament to one man's ego. Oh I'm so scared of getting your "negative" votes! My only complain is the few number of pictures spread in two pages. I don't like pictures divided in this way. Except for the two-pages pictures, the book oposes two pictures, one in each page. Many comparisons are poweful, funny or interesting, but others are not. For instance, see the pages with the snake-hunter and Truman Capote, or the pages with Dick Hickcock and his father, etc. There are many portraits, a few fashion pictures (too few) and a lot of "reportage" pictures. Portraits are the most interesting pictures of the book. The book is organized in three parts. The three parts combine the three types of pictures (portraits, fashion, reportage), but the mixture is different in each case. I love parts 1 and 2 but the selection of the part 3 is strange, with many pictures taken at a mental hospital, victims of the...See less

If you've ever tried to be a good photographer, even as a total amateur, you will appreciate her genius even more. Bravo to Patricia Bosworth for interviewing so many people who are gone now! When you study them, (and you study them, you don't look at them), you quickly understand why. Arbus was a brittle and emotionally volatile woman long before taking these haunting images, the product of a privileged upbringing who cut her teeth in the world of fashion photography, making perfect-looking people look even more perfect. Having refined her technical skills she ventured into the opposite side of that world, seeking out the people society hid and desperately tried to forget. To me this book reveals Arbus as one who used photographs very selectively to portray a distorted, negative view of a subject. She seemed to exploit gloom as a trademark to make herself unique and gain notice. The well-known Jewish Giant portrait of Eddie Carmel and his "dismayed" parents is a case in point of her deception. On page 300-301 is the enlargement of frame number 1 of the contact sheet shown on page 209. Obviously, it was hastily shot before the family was ready or in position for what they thought was to be a warm, family portrait. It was a trick pulled on the unsuspecting, and it does not truly represent anything other than people puzzling over where they should stand for the pictures to come.
