(12/17/06) Imagine the strongest jazz rhythm section you can (bass, drums, keys), get rid of all the superfluous stuff that usually hides them (vocals, guitars, and light shows), and then let 'em get nice and funky. MMW are only about advancing their groove, with an egoless melding that baffles the mind. Each of the plays so loosely, yet together they offer something that's incredibly well structured. This release is really good stuff - "Chubb Sub" especially - and is the release that got MMW's name out of NYC and into the many converstations nationwide. However, your interests might be inclined toward one of their other realeases. For example, _It's a Jungle in Here_ is a bit funkier, _Tonic_ is quite a bit more mellow, and _Friday Afternoon in the Universe_ is a bit more convenitonal. Comment | Was this review helpful to you? (12/17/06) I've always enjoyed and respected Medeski Martin and Wood. The veteran New York trio has always been pushing the musical limits of their sound. Jazz, by nature, is a genre that is founded upon experimentation and an embracing of the unfamiliar. And the fact is, MMW have clearly changed their sound from album to album (from all-out acoustic to Hammond Organ funk) while also maintaining a sense of familiarity. It seems like MMW have released about an album every year for the past several years, which could be arguably good or arguably a mistake. After all, just because a band is prolific does not necessarily mean that their material is superior. However, this is MMW's finest cd. They've joined with one of the Dust Brothers (as producer), which gives the album a very old-school hip/hop vibe (The Dust Brothers did early beats for the Beastie Boys). BUT, couple this with the funky and soulful organ-drums-piano-bass sound that Medeski Martin and Wood are known for, and you have a very...See less

(12/17/06) MMW has changed over the years, from a more straight-up funky avant-garde jazz band to a group of studio experimentalists exploring sonic textures as much as the intricacies of the groove. DJ Logic, who appears here, may have been an impetus for this shift, and the two studio albums since this release show this heightened sense of experimentalism even though Logic doesn't appear on them. Here, the band is beginning to launch off in these new directions but still stays very grounded in what worked for them in the past. My favorite here has to be the B-3 soul version of "Everyday People," which brings out a gospel feel I never noticed in the original. The fact that MMW can interpret a pop standard in an enlightening new way displays their depth of understanding of music as a whole. These guys are bringing jazz back to its edgy roots by pushing it forward. This is a flawless disc and an easy way to discover them and become a convert to the growing MMW fanbase. (12/17/06) For those only casually familiar with MMW, this disc may come off as somewhat of a surprise. The mainstream press has pidgeon-holed these boys as just another "groove-band". While there is definitely a post-hippie following associated with the group, they are at their core, a jazz trio. This is where their roots lie. And as anyone who has seen them live can attest, they are not swayed easily by the desires of their fans to play endless [body]-shaking encores. I have seen them live quite a few times and they always exceed my expectations for great jazz based improvisation. Past tours have generally consisted of an opening set of acoustic jazz trio exploration, followed by a second set of electric groove oriented pieces. When they made their residency stay at Tonic, their focus was an all acoustic setting. No electric instruments. Back to the basics. This album contains the fruits of that endeavor. Within it are swinging jazz piano trio stylings merged with free form explorations and...See less

(12/17/06) its a jungle introduces you to one of the fastest evolving groups of this time. although this album was recorded with the most conservative instrumentation of any MMW album, on IAJIH MMW showcase their ability to reform the "organ" trio with liquid rhythms and virtuoso musicianship. the music on IAJIH projects a standard jazz feel, but beautifully combines bebop, stride, swing, rock, funk, free, and lounge styles into an impressive jazz fusion which creates a basis for MMW's futuristic sound. If your at all intrigued by the more recent experimental MMW albums, try this one out, and you will better understand the roots of this incredible trio. 5 stars easy, a groundbreaking work in the world of jazz. (12/17/06) This is the belated follow-up the 1998 MMW collaboration with John Scofield, A Go-Go, and the music here is of a more collaborative nature rather than featured soloist and backing band. With a few exceptions, the music mines the same funky fusion territory with a few covers and on the two best cuts, the looming influence of John Scofield's one time boss, Miles Davis. I found that the music varied in quality, but preferred the uptempoed music, which focused the band and gave direction to their obvious talent. "Little Walter Rides Again" has a funky feel with some hip drumming and swirling organ... but if it's about Little Walter Jacobs, the bluesman, why no harmonica? "Miles Beyond" name checks Davis directly with a very cool track channeling the "dark funk" of his '73-'75 pre-retirement years. This is the best track on the disc - focused, potent and full of energy. "In Case the World Changes It's Mind" drops down into a more pedestrian funk groove. The problem with some of the more...See less

(12/17/06) About the Band: Dead Can Dance is considered the seminal example of the ethereal or heavenly voices genre. In fact, the name of the label, 4AD, which carried many of the 1990s DCD releases, is sometimes also used to describe this genre of music, which is a fusion of subtle electronics, vocals, drums, world music, and a near limitless count of instruments. Brendan Perry sometimes has been described as a gothic Frank Sinatra. Lisa Gerrard's enchanting vocals are often sung in a language only known to Lisa. I count myself among the many that hold these two musicians in the highest esteem. About the Album: Compared to more recent albums that are loaded with bonus tracks, the 50-minutes of Into the Labyrinth would seem short, if it weren't for the fact that I like to listen to this album over and over again. I count this album as one of my all time favorites, and certainly my most prized Dead Can Dance CD. One of the nicest things about this album is that it features nearly equal amounts of...See less

(12/17/06) Saw them on October 4, 2005 (My Birthday) and I was totally blown away. Upon leaving the venue, I made up my mind to purchase "WAKE" as well as "Into the Labyrinth". Both were on my shopping list and I purchased both and don't regret a minute of it! My favorite songs on this collection are: YULUNGA, HOW FORTUNATE THE MAN WITH NONE, THE CARNIVAL IS OVER, RAKIM, SANVEAN, I CAN SEE NOW, AMERICAN DREAMING, THE HOST OF SERAPHIM, and CANTARA. Disc 2 features the more "known & loved" songs. On the contrary, Disc 1 features songs which I only know 3/4 of. For those who aren't aware of this remarkable duo & their equally remarkable band...you MUST buy "WAKE". It's definitely worth owning because of the quality of sound & the selection of tracks. Every track will move you, mind, body & soul. Lisa Gerrard & Brendan Perry are 2 of the finest vocalists & musicians to walk to earth. When I saw them live for the first time, I was awestruck by Lisa's remarkable, versatile & creamy voice, as well as...See less

(12/17/06) 'Aion' was my introduction to Dead Can Dance (DCD) and it has truly made a fan of me! The choral explosion on "Arrival and the Reunion" [pulled] me in fast as it reminded me a lot of neo-goth group, Mors Syphilitica. Then comes a 14th-century instrumental piece called "Saltarello", which has a great Renaissance dance beat that's really quite irresistible when it comes to swaying in your stilled position! The music slows down a bit once "Song of the Sibyl" comes on though as it features very little background noise. Instead it focuses solely on the chilling vocals of Lisa Gerrard's shaky yet affective vibrato. One of the best Dead Can Dance songs with Lisa singing on vocals however would have to be "As The Bell Rings the Maypole Spins", which features some incredible bagpipe playing! I love both of the duo's voices so I really appreciate the fact that they trade-off after "Song Of The Sibyl" from Lisa to Brendan Perry, whom sings on the subtle Medieval tune, "Fortune Presents Gifts Not...See less

(12/17/06) Dead Can Dance's first album, eponymously titled and released in 1984, meshed well with the industrial production and female vocal trends of the 4AD label. Nonetheless, it's different from anything the band did after and is a clearly immature effort. Dead Can Dance's early sound was raw, nocturnal, and a product of the post-goth musical landscape of early 80's England. There are foreshadowings of the classical/baroque and world music influence that the band would later incorporate, but the album is firmly grounded in rock production. Because Brendan Perry was the less-shy member of the team in the beginning, he is the center of several songs on the album. "The Trial," "Fortune," and "East of Eden" display his curious lyricism. Lisa Gerrard's voice was much rawer in the early days of DCD, and the classic "Frontier" (later made a music video on the 4AD compilation LONELY IS AN EYESORE) and "Threshold" display a side she later moved past. The out-of-body experience "Ocean" is just as...See less

(12/17/06) Matthew G. Davidson brings together a group of talented artists to produce one of the best World Fusion albums to be released yet. Bringing the analog and digital together in a tapestry of intrigue and adventure, Archetibe has produced an aural imagery that allows one to travel the world through sound. Anyone who appreciates the melding of many cultures will understand how this becomes a unique sound that transcends the boarders not only in country, but indeed the imagination. Not the sum of all the pieces, but an alchemy of something much greater. This is a sound you will want others to hear and will most certainly be an experience you'll want over and over. From the introduction of "Cycle of Dust" to "Solace," this is an experience of movement, rhythm and a melody that weaves through your mind and brings your thoughts to a higher plane. This is not music to "play" or even to be used as a "background," but an aural experience of knowledge best experienced with headphones while...See less

(12/17/06) About the Band: Dead Can Dance is considered the seminal example of the ethereal (in the US) or heavenly voices (in Europe) genre. In fact, the name of the label, 4AD, which carried many of the 1990s DCD releases, is sometimes also used to describe this genre of music, which is a fusion of subtle electronics, vocals, drums, world music, and a near limitless count of instruments. I count myself among the many that hold these two musicians in the highest esteem. About the Album: Toward the Within is a live album from 1994, and though many music fans will often prefer the quality associated with a studio recorded album, I personally feel that heavenly voices music is designed to be emotional and moving ... and this album has a sincerity that will touch any listener. Toward the Within is one of my favorite albums. Fans of Brendan Perry's...See less

(12/18/06) UNCHAINED is Johnny Cash's second album of 5 albums of fresh recording in a row, for Rick Rubin's American label. This one does not have an official number, II, in the CD title, but III, IV, and V do. UNCHAINED came out in 1996, a decade ago. It is fourteen songs in 43 minutes. The previous album, was his first 1994 AMERICAN RECORDINGS (I) from producer Rick Rubin's efforts to get Johnny on his label, and it was a very successful hit comeback for Johnny Cash's career reboot. It was very interesting with it's stripped down, minimalistic, unplugged sound of ONLY Johnny Cash's singing and acoustic guitar playing. (BTW: a 2006 CD collection entitled PERSONAL FILE uses the same concept of ONLY Johnny and his acoustic guitar, and is BETTER than AMERICAN I, since PERSONAL FILE has two CDs for a couple of bucks more, and each CD is longer, the song choices are better, and the singing and guitar playing is better, being from a younger Johnny Cash by a decade or two!) UNCHAINED adds a full back...See less

(12/18/06) Some of the harsh criticism here from the darkling seeds is unwarranted and shows their lack of range, while this release showed the band increasing their musical boundaries. True that it is more pop I suppose, but it was hardly mainstream at the time. "The Walk" is the closest they ever came to synth pop, but it still had a haunting tone and mysterious subject matter. So did "LaMent", the tale of a dead young girl whose body is seen drifting under a bridge; the corpse is poetically described as the "ice cream river body" probably describing the diffuse, blurry way the submerged body would look - this song feels a bit like "Charlotte Sometimes without the bass. Also dark and mysterious is the nervous, paranoid "The Upstairs Room". Hold on, I'm getting a theme here. This album may have been bouncy and had some beat but it was still quite morose and way left of center. In fact, most Cure fans I know loved this collection of 3 singles. For sure, it wasn't there best, more of a short,...See less

(12/18/06) Disintegration is the best album ever.... God bless the boys from South Park. Kyle may have gotten it right. This album is epic. Before this record The Cure's music was underground club type music, and fit very nicely in the "post-punk" label. The music on this record has an incredibly beautiful melancholy to it. Most of the songs have a slow tempo and just ooze with a dark moodiness that makes you feel. I don't know that it can make everyone feel the same, but it will definitely make you feel. The songs are a bit long, but that is not a bad thing as each is beautifully orchestrated. There is no filler in this record, and actually some of The Cure's best work is on this album. "Pictures Of You", "Love Song", "Lullaby", "Fascination Street", and "Prayers For Rain" are probably the best songs, but every song is incredible. Overall it's as bleak as any album I've ever heard, and it is painfully intimate. It's one I simply can't stop listening to, despite the dark melancholy of the music....See less

(12/18/06) Please ignore what the detractors here have said. Obviously, if it's only tuneless 11-minute goth epics you're looking for, a Cure best-of CD is not going to be your thing. Turn on "The Same Deep Water As You," inject some controlled substances, and wallow in your tears. But for the rest of us who actually appreciate melodies as long as they aren't too commercialized, STARING AT THE SEA is an amazingly good record, and probably the best single Cure album you can buy, especially if you haven't heard much from them before ("Friday I'm in Love," although it's good, doesn't really count). This is absolutely not an album of light and mindless pop. Songs like "The Walk," "Let's Go to Bed," and even, god forbid, "The Love Cats" all utilize drum machines and synthesizers, but they still have that dark, introspective, wintry mood that marks them as distinctly Cure. And you can't call "Close to Me" a sellout, in fact I'm amazed it was a hit at all, with such a lo-fi production style and jazz...See less

(06/24/07) From the second I heard her debut single, "Video," in 2001, I knew that I would be a fan for life. I didn't completely love either of her first CDs. Her debut was nice, but a few songs were iffy for me. Her second album felt a little rushed and seemed like a handful of great tracks tossed in with a bunch of filler material. And I could never stand her interludes, sorry to say. By no means did I not enjoy the CDs. I would probably give both four stars, but the point is... I had never been able to listen to one of her albums straight through, even though I love her. Until now, that is. This album was so unexpected. It was one of the most pleasant surprises of the year for me. The whole thing is amazing. I listen to it straight through all the time, interludes and all! Her voice has improved so much; it has gained a new purity and it is now smooth as butter. It glides over the tracks. The production is flawless. She has added a lot of other influences in the mix, including country and...See less
