The hat sweeps across the forhead like a turban and ties to one side but it is held on the head like a topper. It sits on top of the head. This clearly shows in the photograph. Some dealers and collectors slightly reshape the handle to do away with the mite damage. I prefer to sell such fine antiques in their original condition. It is a fact that all early authentic tortoise shell will have some damage caused by mites. Further damage can be avoided by rubbing vaseline on the frames. I remember watching old movies as a young girl and thinking how "smart" they looked in their military garb. Well, I finally made the pattern, and here is my modern military cap. The style is adorable, and wonderfully comfortable. Being a non-conformist, I wanted a cap that was my own...don't get me wrong I love newsboys, and driving caps, but this is my design...not someone elses. This one is made from white patterned damask, lined in black and white gingham cotton. Thanks to a customer wanting a blocked look, but with fabric, I have discovered that it can be done with very specific fabrics. This mini fedora/riding hat is woven wool fabric that I hand blocked, and draped a brim, which is sewn on. I had no idea that fabric could be boiled and blocked, but it worked! I must say that the result is beyond what I had hoped. I will be experimenting more with this technology. Underneath it is a wool base to give it structure, and stability. It is also hand dyed red with a wash of black, between that and the square shape it looks like red velvet cake in my mind, hence the name!
