Well, I finally made the pattern, and here is my modern military cap. The style is adorable, and wonderfully comfortable. Being a non-conformist, I wanted a cap that was my own...don't get me wrong I love newsboys, and driving caps, but this is my design...not someone elses. This one is made from white patterned damask, lined in black and white gingham cotton. Despite all of this she was an huge star in the 1920s, and adored by all. She was said to have been friendly, generous and so grateful for her success, that she always remained humble. She was also a beauty that was said to have had that "It" factor...a strange magnetism that attracts both sexes. Well, this piece is very special. While I was dismantling the old, rusty, filthy clockworks to get at the parts I wanted I got a nasty cut & puncture wound that required a trip to the hospital and consequently a Tetanus shot. Being someone who is not over fond of needles, it was an all around traumatic experience. Alas, the trauma that this hat caused me made me love it even more, and spend even more time lovingly creating it. The piece that bit me is not on the hat, so there is no danger to it's prospective owner. Tetanus is held on by elastic straps that go under your hair, and it is very secure. Thanks to a customer wanting a blocked look, but with fabric, I have discovered that it can be done with very specific fabrics. This mini fedora/riding hat is woven wool fabric that I hand blocked, and draped a brim, which is sewn on. I had no idea that fabric could be boiled and blocked, but it worked! I must say that the result is beyond what I had hoped. I will be experimenting more with this technology. Underneath it is a wool base to give it structure, and stability.
