But while Regina Spektor's music is anti-folk in the way it subverts the traditional coffeehouse vibe, it's less interested in rebellion and more concerned with the joy of eccentricity, melody and surprise. Begin To Hope is full of surprises, and like her promising major label debut Soviet Kitsch, it displays an easy facility with song structure that enables her to go in different--sometimes wildly off-the-wall--directions without sounding scattered. Classically trained on the piano, she's been compared to Tori Amos, but her music isn't as delicate or precious. Fiona Apple comes up as well, but just because neither fits in the usual female singer/songwriter cookie cutter mold doesn't mean they sound the same. I read a review for this album as "...so good that, in a just world, it would stop the war on its own." Oh, how right that is. A distinctly modern melange of n wave, dance, alterna-pop, and synth, I'd best describe Postal Service as "Electro-indie". If you're a child of the 80s like me who grew up with New Order, OMD, Depeche Mode and Pet Shop Boys, no need to read further--you'll immediately love "Give Up". In the midst of NYC's current electroclash craze which is so overhyped at times (gosh, just lay down some minimal synths and have some bored models chant vocals), Postal Service is the outstanding contender as the smartest electro band of the year with an album that's so emotional (melody-wise and lyric-wise), so beautiful, and so well-produced that it puts bands like Fischerspooner to shame. Beck is one of the musicians that you can really call an artist -- he grows, experiments, and works tirelessly on... whatever he's doing next. "Guero" (meaning "white boy") is a glorious, fun album that runs the gamut from distortion rock to Latin hip-hop. It's like a glorious musical collage. It kicks off with the funky, distorted "e-Pro," which seems to hint at the style and attitude of Beck's "Midnight Vultures." From there he slips effortlessly into steady rock'n'roll set with electronica flourishes, some blues, country, a dash of funk, and a bit of retro pop. A little of this, a little of that, mix and bake at four hundred degrees. However, Beck seems to try to give "Guero" a Latin flavor to match the title: in one song he raps in Spanish, while he gives a bossa nova flavor to "Missing." Even though this isn't any more caliber material than Transatlantism to be the next Nevermind, this is pleasing to the ear. I mentioned in my review of the previous effort, Transatlanticism, that is was nothing to change music in the likes of Sgnt. Peppers or The Wall. Neither does Plans. In fact, Plans more or less picks up where Transatlantism left off. Both albums are discs to put in and, though they are not necisarrily recognizable at first listen, eventually attract your attention the way your third grade teacher would do when you were caught daydreaming. "Soul Meets Body" is one of those songs that you can't help but tap your foot to. The lyrics are a nod to poetic song writing that most of us thought left with the disbanding of Simon and Garfunkel. "I Will Follow You Into The Dark" is about the eternal unity of hearts. While Trans. It contains everything one could desire about the simplicity of the 60's. From The Beatles to Elvis Costello, he wears his influences on his shoulder, but never makes the music seems trite or old. This is fresh power pop in the tradition of modern acts like Fountains Of Wayne and Superdrag. Here we are reminded that a gripping tune laid down by truthful lyrics and an intoxicating chorus are all that is needed to declare the message. The first thing to know about Greetings from Michigan, the third album from Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter Sufjan Stevens, is that its creator was born there. Few albums more clearly evoke their namesake: Towering pines, highways paved through granite walls, great lakes and deep valleys resonate in its gentle piano, muted trumpets, and close-mic'd production-- which is particularly odd, given that Stevens' home city is Detroit. It leads you to wonder how one could craft an album so delicate from an inspiration its author calls a "monstrous concrete prison" which has been "destroyed by its infidelity." Certainly, the album is run through with a wistful melancholia, with lyrics that reference the city's dead machinery and empty warehouses. But there's a reason the album's title greets its listeners from the state and not the city: The record is a beautiful, sprawling homage to the self-described pleasant peninsula.
