(12/31/10) They are bold and unique, but most of all, they’re mod! This group of lively young Europeans is bound by an adoration for everything from scooters, to sideburns, to swinging 1960s fashion. Comprised of a collection of photos by Horst Friedrichs, this book documents Friedrichs' experience of the mod culture revival in the 90s and beyond, and captures the contemporary world of go-go boots, bob hair cuts, and new-found nostalgia for this wave of mod madness. Whether you keep this book of sensational retro style close by for instant inspiration, or on your coffee table for guests to gawk over, you're sure to be thinking of thrifting by page three! (12/21/10) The best part about the beginning of November in Britain is the fact that no sooner have we finished trick or treating then we have to start preparing for Bonfire Night. Bonfire Night can be traced directly to events that occurred around the beginning of November in 1605, known as The Gunpowder Plot, an attempt to overthrow the government of King James and the Church of England. It was on the 5th November 1605 that our (anti-) hero Guy Fawkes was caught red handed in the cellars of the Houses of Parliament with several barrels of gunpowder (according to sources, the actual number varies between 20 and 36; suffice to say, it was enough!). Mr. Fawkes and his fellow were tried as traitors and executed. Our version of Bonfire has a decidedly American, point of view. We remember a less complicated and less regulated time, when we would rake the fallen, dried maple leaves from the lawn into large piles, which our fathers would burn, making the bonfires of our youth. It is that smell of...See less

(12/21/10) Our favorite pomegranate story, not surprisingly, is the Greek myth of Persephone. Hades abducts the beautiful daughter of Zeus and Demeter, our namesake, and carries Persephone to the Underworld. Tempted by the luscious Pomegranate, Persephone is made his eternal queen by eating its seeds, only able to return above ground for six months, her return heralding the arrival of Spring. Given that heritage, Pomegranate by the Demeter Fragrance Library had to be great, and this one is, capturing all the freshness and deep, sweet, citrus flavor that tempted Persephone in the first place.See less

(12/21/10) Tiramisu by Demeter Fragrance Library is full of yummy chocolate and coffee flavors…what could be better? Everybody knows by now that Tiramisu’ means “pick-me-up†in Italian, for the high energetic content (eggs and sugar) and the caffeine of the strong espresso coffee. There are many different stories about the origin of Tiramisu’. It is a layered cake; therefore some people place its origin in Tuscany, where another famous layered Italian dessert is very popular. It is ca...See less

(12/21/10) Autumn in a bottle, with notes of sweet apples, cinnamon, spices....... Cider is a relative of wine, with almost as ancient a history. Cider was common in England back before the Christian era, where apple trees were worshipped as sacred. Especially in New England, cider was an immensely popular drink with the pilgrims and was drunk at meals by everyone, including children. Even clergymen, while denouncing 'harder spirits', would drink cider as a matter of course.See less

(12/21/10) Comfort in a cup, lovely bergamot............milk? lemon? One lump or two? The legend is that a British diplomat, sent as part of a trade delegation to China in 1834 by the second Earl Grey, saved the life of a mandarin's son who was drowning. The grateful mandarin gave the diplomat a recipe for a blend of tea to present to the Earl. The second Earl Grey passed it onto his tea merchant, who used the recipe to recreate the blend for the Earl's private use. The tea was so well received among the Earl's guests that they began asking where they could buy the tea. The Earl gave it his name, and the rest is history. Earl Grey is a blend of fine black China teas and the natural oil of bergamot, a pear-shaped citrus fruit. The name bergamot comes from the Turkish for 'prince's pear'. Bergamot is grown exclusively in Italy and Sicily. It has very powerful oil that can be pressed out of its rind. It is this oil that is blended with the tea to provide the aromatic and distinctive flavor that is...See less

(12/21/10) The origins of creme brulee are hotly debated. The Spanish call it crema catalana and say they invented it during the 18th century. In the south of France, it is known as creme catalan and is believed to have been born there. Meanwhile, the Brits contend that it was first made during the 17th century at Trinity College in Cambridge, where it is known as Cambridge burnt cream or Trinity cream. Indeed, it wasn't until the late 19th-century that the French translation of "burnt cream" (creme brulee) came into vogue, causing the popular perception that it's a uniquely French dish. Demeter’s Crème Brulee is the classic caramelized version, with emphasis on vanilla, cream and sugar, with a touch of burnt, caramelized sugar, and NO CALORIES!See less

(12/21/10) Tiny bubbles... Champagne, France, is home to the bottle beverage enjoyed by many on New Year's Eve. Champagne was first made by a monk, Dom Perignon, in 1688. He was appointed treasurer at the Abby of Hautcillers to develop the areas wine industry and part of his duties included managing the wine making and cellars. Perignon made a beverage with bubbles that would explode in storage. The bubbles in the champagne and sparkling wine develop during the fermentation process. This was not the outcome Perignon had wanted to achieve. He wanted to prevent the bubbles and make a wine more pleasing to the courts. However, after people tasted the fizzy beverage, they started to demand it and the drink became the rage in Europe. You'll notice the champagne is bottled in thicker glass than wine, for instance, and that the corks are thicker, too. Perignon used thicker bottles and cork stoppers to prevent the bottles from exploding during the fermentation process. Perignon mastered the art of...See less

(12/21/10) The sweetest kind of cake? Why not? A rodeo on the top? Ballerinas? Roses? Your choice. Evidence of birthday observances dates back before the rise of Christianity. In pagan cultures, people feared evil spirits - especially on their birthdays. It was a common belief that evil spirits were more dangerous to a person when he or she experienced a change in their daily life, such as turning a year older. As a result, birthdays were merry occasions celebrated with family and friends, who surrounded the person of honor with laughter and joy in order to protect them from evil. Instead of gifts, most guests brought positive thoughts and happy wishes for the upcoming year. However, if well-wishers did bring gifts, it was considered an especially good influence for the birthday person. The world's largest birthday cake was created in 1989 for the 100th Birthday of the city of Fort Payne, Alabama. The cake weighed 128,238 pounds, 8 oz. and used 16,209 pounds of icing. We could not find what this...See less

(12/21/10) Basil It's not commonly known that basil originated in India. It was brought to the Mediterranean via the spice routes in ancient times. Basil spread to other parts of Asia, and became popular in the use of curries in Thailand, and in Italian cuisine. In Romania, basil took a more romantic turn; when a man accepts a sprig of basil from a woman, he is officially engaged. The Greek word for basil means royal or kingly. It was believed that only the king himself should harvest this herb, and only with the use of a golden sickle. No matter what the country the consensus is that basil is Royalty amongst the herb family. Demeter’s Basil Pick-Me-Up cologne is made from essential oil distilled from sweet basil, the kind most commonly grown in herb garden and used in cooking-a fragrant and unforgettable scent.See less
