There was another book that had a similar feel, but this book is soooo much better. This is the book that , "Get Crafty: Hip Home Ec (see my review)"was trying to be. I like that the chapters are logical with an interesting layout that is easy to follow. The chapters include Food (my favorite subject), Home Decorating, Wearables, Potions (soaps, bath, cosmetics) and Special Events and Gifts. By A Customer I was disappointed to discover that "Adventures With Pinhole and Home-Made Cameras" amounts basically to a coffee table book of photographs, with frustratingly brief sketches of the "who and how" of their making. It is not a practically-oriented book for the photographic tinkerer. Even the most sophisticated designs in the book are explained in only a cursory way. Helpful diagrams and hints to construction techniques are rare. Detailed descriptions and breakdowns of real home-made cameras are missing altogether! The book does offer a some clever ideas, like using a wine glass as an improvised lens. There is also a section in the back with information on making pinholes, calculating exposure, etc. These are only a precious few pages, however, and most of the information can be easily found elsewhere. I bought this book as an educated photographer with an interest in building some unusual designs. I don't think that owning this book would have brought me any closer to that... See less

As one of the legion who have photos that are less than spectacular, but that still have some sentimental value, I could see the possibilities open up. So I was thrilled to discover she has written an entire book of her ideas, and picked up my own copy as soon as I could find one. I am not disappointed. Filled with examples of complete works, including the works of other artists such as Lynne Perella, Nina Bagley and Carlo Thertus, the book shows a multitude of ideas for altering not only real photographs, but images from other sources, such as magazines and postage stamps. Techniques are numerous, ranging from those that are easily done with tools around the house, such as scratching designs in the photos, to more complex techniques, such as the gum dichromate process. If this is not your first foray into altering, then chances are you already own some of these books, have been to the websites (such as ISABA), and are a member of some of the many online groups. If you fit this category, then to be perfectly honest, you probably won't find much that is new in Barbara Matthiessen's book. It lacks detailed information on techniques and substitutes what is generally a "go out and buy" attitude. It encourages the purchase of materials such as premade scrapbooking items rather than giving ideas for an individual to make and incorporate in the creative act. Altering books is one of the crafts that affords the integration of everyday materials in a way that is fun and INEXPENSIVE. This book should have a shopping list in the back and get it over with. Showing examples of other artist's work is fine but if that is all there is the author could just put together a book of "other people's ideas". There are numerous other books on altered books and journals and I would encourage anyone interested in engaging in this craft look to those instead. The concept is simple: people find things that they were not intended to find, and send it in to Davy, who sorts the wheat from the chaff and comes up with a pithy book of insight on the American psyche. Some of the things that have been found are unreal. I am particularly fond of the love letters and notes left on double parked cars. Others are simply too bizarre to try to contextualize, such as notes reading "Warning: The iguana is loose on the porch...", and "If the ball is too loud take it up when you sleep and put it back down when you get up", for instance. But my all time favorites are the lost pet flyers. I feel really bad writing this, because Sabrina has been one of the biggest inspirations to me, and my copies of her previous works are dog-earred and completely pre-loved. And I was utterly unbearably excited about this one. So I sat down with a nice rich hot chocolate and a spare hour.. The truth is though, I truly don't think this work is as good. Not to say I regret buying it or I wouldn't recommend it, but I suggest that people do not expect another 'Spilling Open.' I feel like a lot of pages are wasted. There is a huge amount of photography, and some are truly beautiful works, but others are completely uninspiring and seem like page-fillers. What seems like endless pages of out-of-focus buildings and blocks of colours. This is particularly so with the first half of the book, though the second half does improve as she moves from New York. Additionally, the other works contained a discernible story, or a gradual coming-of-age or at least, the progress of her life could be followed.... See less
