(01/09/10) This is the most recent project of 'Magnum' photographer Carl De Keyzer; a sharp image of Congo as it is today. De Keyzer has visited places that were tourist hotspots before their independence and thus shows us the remains of the Belgian presence in modern Congo. Carl De Keyzer travelled through Congo for over 10 months to make this book, often in very dangerous areas. This has resulted in a unique documentary with an historic meaning.See less

(01/03/10) Stephen Fry's first novel is absolutely brilliant and there are laughs and surprises on virtually every page. The title character contains more of a hint of the author himself particularly if you have read Fry's autobiography. It will keep you guessing throughout and I defy anyone who does not laugh out loud at least twenty times while reading it. As well as being funny it is also delicately touching; in short it is amazingSee less

(01/03/10) "'Stephen Fry is one of the great originals... This autobiography of his first twenty years is a pleasure to read, mixing outrageous acts with sensible opinions in bewildering confusion... That so much outward charm, self-awareness and intellect should exist alongside behaviour that threatened to ruin the lives of innocent victims, noble parents and Fry himself, gives the book a tragic grandeur and lifts it to classic status.' Financial Times; 'A remarkable, perhaps even unique, exercise in autobiography... that aroma of authenticity that is the point of all great autobiographies; of which this, I rather think, is one' Evening Standard; 'He writes superbly about his family, about his homosexuality, about the agonies of childhood... some of his bursts of simile take the breath away... his most satisfying and appealing book so far' Observer"See less

See less

(08/07/09) From Publishers Weekly English singer/songwriter Nick Drake was a nearly unknown cult figure when he died from an overdose of antidepressants in 1974, but the number of his admirers has grown steadily ever since. Musicians in particular are drawn to his delicate, melancholy folk tunes and to the legend of his depressive isolation and suicide at age 26. Humphries, Drake's first biographer, faced difficult working conditions without the cooperation of Drake's producer, Joe Boyd, or of Drake's family, and without even permission to quote Drake's lyrics. Still, he has done his legwork, although exact causes of Drake's decline remain unclear. Interviews with schoolboy chums reveal that, far from being withdrawn, Drake engaged in normal boyish hijinks. And although he was frustrated by his lack of success, it appears that Drake was doomed to obscurity by his own refusal to allow Island records to promote him, rather than by the indifference of the music world. Futhermore, although Drake...See less

(08/07/09) From Publishers Weekly These often hilarious, sometimes contrived essays put the "me" in "confessional memoir" front and center. Burroughs recounts scenes from the floridly dysfunctional childhood chronicled in his bestselling Running with Scissors, along with vignettes from various bad jobs, including his travails at an ad agency, and his life as a famous writer. His theme is himself: his struggles with alcoholism, a voracious Nicorette habit, compulsive Web surfing, slovenliness, social isolation, unfitness for employment, gross bodily emissions and general embarrassment at being alive. The thin story linesa visit from the tooth fairy, a trip to the doctor, house-training a puppysuggest that Burroughs's well-mined vein of life experience may be played out. He fattens up the materiala (Frey-inspired?) disclaimer warns some events have been "expanded and changed"in ways that sometimes ring false, especially in his childhood reminiscences, which are improbably detailed and infused...See less

(08/07/09) Amazon.com Review Amazon Significant Seven, April 2008: When I started reading A Wolf at the Table, I thought I knew what to expect. Augusten Burroughs captures intense experience with an inexplicably cool remove, imparting a stillness and purity to emotions that would likely run amok in anyone else's hands. I love this quality of his writing, and it's present in full force in this memoir of a childhood spent in thrall to a predatory and deeply unpredictable father. What I wasn't prepared for was the suspense--the dread-filled, nearly sonorous waiting for the worst to happen. An artful sort of bait-and-switch happens in the telling: Burroughs brings you to the brink of a terrible catharsis more than once, but the break in tension never comes. It is profoundly sad, remarkably tender, and fueled by a sense of love and reverence that only a child knows. --Anne Bartholomew --This text refers to the Hardcover edition. (08/07/09) ...and Augusten Burrough's 'Dry' may have just complicated, heightened, worsened my reading addiction. I'm afraid no other book will match the experience of reading 'Dry'. Ever. Two sittings and I was drained, done, exhausted. Instantly pulled in by Burrough's hip, ironic take on addicts' self-denial, I found myself masterfully deluded and rolling right along with Augusten. Minnesota rehab seemed a breezy snap. Work resumes successfully, despite hilariously bad ad campaigns. Hey, there's even a glimmer of hope old lovers can reunite. I keep picturing Mary '06, now maybe a black-clad, silver haired lesbian/recovering alcoholic, beret tossed in the air...'you're gonna make it after all!' But addictions and viruses don't spontaneously clear. Virulently, violently they often resurface. And with that, Burroughs led me to another wormhole and into another reality where hats aren't caught, ironic smirks and knowing laughs disappear, and hearts break. Mine did. Yours will too. Yet you'll never...See less
