It may lack the cultural-landmark status of The Simpsons or the gross-out slacker cachet of South Park, but Seth MacFarlane's Family Guy is truly a gem among TVs animated prime-time series, an often hilarious outing that enjoyed an unjustly short (1999-2001) network run. The series about the Quahog, Rhode Island, Griffins -- beer-swilling dad Peter, put-upon mom Lois, teens Meg and Chris, baby Stewie, and family pooch Brian -- obviously found some inspiration in Matt Groening's Springfield. Yet The Family Guy manages to up the ante on irreverence, sinking its teeth into targets ranging from Big Tobacco to tainted elections. The show's power lies in its eclectic ensemble cast -- with the voice and maniacal demeanor of a 007 villain, enfant terrible Stewie is a wondrous creation, a chatty genius baby bent on world domination yet frustrated by the limits facing any one-year-old.
