(07/24/07) This sumptiously illustrated book, the literary tie-in to a television series, is written by Simon Schama, a noted art historian and Rembrandt scholar; the book represents both the best and the worst of him. Readers of his articles in The New Yorker know that almost no one can describe a painting or a sculpture with the verve and detail of Schama. But the effort here to serve a more general and more commercial purpose has left him confused as to how high or how low he should pitch his voice. The trouble begins with the title, "The Power of Art", a conundrum that is never adequately explained by either the brief Introduction or the sections on individual artists that follow. Schama offers no over-arching theme with which to discuss the important question implied by the title; from his powerful desciptions of the art works, as well as his romantic view of the lives of his heroes, one may infer that he believes in some variant of Kant's aesthetic theory of the sublime, that great art...See less

(07/16/07) As a person, Paul McCartney has done an efficient job of keeping his personal affairs outside of the public eye, and that judicious sense of self-protection has always extended to his music. One reason his solo career has been so frustrating is because we rarely catch a glimpse of what is really on his mind. His recent marital issues have been tabloid fodder for quite a while now, though, and I'd bet that many fans are secretly hoping that juicy tidbits concerning his divorce will be revealed in his newer material. A nasty break-up song would be most scintillating, but true fans already know that the odds of hearing anything so bluntly autobiographical from Sir Paul is virtually nonexistent. Well, hold onto your hats. You still have to make presumptions, and assume even more, but it's obvious that McCartney has a lot on his mind, and he's putting those thoughts into lyrics. For once thing, if you are in the mood for something upbeat and energetic, this isn't going to be your album. It is quiet, somber, reflective, minimalistic. There are albums that have gripped me on a first hearing, but more often than not they tend to fade in appeal as time goes by. This is a "difficult" album, but once you penetrate the apparent lack of diversity and instead the come to appreciate the subtle variations from one song to another, it can possess at a far deeper level than more accessible but ultimately more superficial ones. This is music stripped down to essentials. I have been alternatively listening to this and a superb Teenage Fan Club album, and while I love both, the differences between the two couldn't be starker.
