(01/30/09) The director (Rob Cohen) and star (Vin Diesel) of the previous summer's hit The Fast and the Furious (2001) are reunited for this spy thriller billed as a next-generation James Bond adventure. Diesel stars as Xander Cage, a nihilist extreme sports enthusiast nicknamed "Triple X" because of a large tattoo covering his back and neck. Cage's illegal stunts and poor attitude (he's given to spouting dialogue such as, "Have you ever been punched in the face for talking too much?") land him in jail, where he's recruited/blackmailed into government service by the National Security Agency's Augustus Gibbons, who likes Cage for his skills and expendability. The new secret agent is assigned to infiltrate a Russian crime ring called Anarchy 99, whose access to biochemical weaponry is making the United States extremely nervous. With the help of some high-tech gadgets from weapons master Toby Lee Shavers (Michael Roof), Cage is able to make his way into Anarchy 99, where he targets the group's...See less

(01/30/09) The "diversity" in this edition of Short refers to ethnic diversity, not a diverse array of films on view. Unfortunately, this batch isn't nearly as compelling as the previous DVDs in the series. Of the six shorts presented, the most intriguing are "Buy My Film," a 1995 mixed-media contribution from director John Schnall, and Saving Private Ryan actor Vin Diesel's "Multi-Facial" are the most intriguing, clever, and palatable of the lot, though Diesel's extra goodies--six interviews and a bit called "Vin Works on Iron Giant"--reek of commercialism and self-promotion. As is the case with all the Short editions, the Sound Bit section, here with jazz cellist Erik Friedlander, is a must-watch. But Short 5 is also plagued by the spate of consumer-driven spots and ads that open each film, and they taint the entire package with a television mentality, ignoring the real purpose of the series--to promote short films as an art form. --Paula NechakSee less

(01/30/09) Story For whatever reason, the world in 2019 is in total disarray. Maybe it has to do with terrorism. Or global warming. Anyway, anarchy rules in Eastern Europe, which is where we find exiled American mercenary Toorop (Vin Diesel). Desperate to go home, Toorop agrees to transport a strange young woman from a Mongolian convent to New York City. In a film that been hacked to pieces and makes little sense, this is the first thing that strikes you as being really dumb. Why hire a moron to protect the naif responsible for what her religious order is promoting as a “miracle in the making”? Toorop not only places Aurora’s (Melanie Thierry) life in danger by making dangerous unscheduled stops, but he habitually loses her in crowds or allows her to be whisked off by those who want to stop her from reaching her destination.More ReviewSee less
