(05/20/10) "This unique and essential guide to human visual perception and related cognitive principles will enrich courses on information visualization and empower designers to see their way forward. Ware's updated review of empirical research and interface design examples will do much to accelerate innovation and adoption of information visualization." -Ben Shneiderman, University of Maryland "Colin Ware is the perfect person to write this book, with a long history of prominent contributions to the visual interaction with machines and to information visualization directly. It goes a long way towards joining science to the practical design of information visualization systems." -from the foreword by Stuart Card, PARC "Better than anyone else that I've encountered in my work, Colin Ware explains how visual perception works and how it applies to data presentation." - Stephen Few -- Intelligent EnterpriseSee less

(07/23/09) Synopsis The human brain will do a number of unusual, interesting and important things - if given time. As described in this book, there is evidence from cognitive science and elsewhere that it will learn patterns of a degree of subtlety which normal, purposeful, busy consciousness cannot even see, let alone master; it will make sense out of hazy, ill-defined situations which leave everyday rationality flummoxed; it will get to the bottom of personal, emotional issues much more successfully than the questing intellect; it will detect and respond to meaning - in poetry, for example - that cannot be articulated; and it will sometimes come up with solutions to complicated predicaments that are wise rather than merely clever. The book explores these slower ways of knowing and explains how we could, or should, use them more often and more effectively.See less

(02/20/08) This movie starts out brilliantly and sets itself up to be a really good thriller before selling itself short by revealing its secret far too early and decending to a ludicrously contrived ending. Its a shame because this movie did have a really interesting premise to work with but yet it failed to convert this into a really good movie. Nick Cage stars as a corrupt Atlantic City cop with Gary Sinise as his old buddy who is now a naval officer. The movie opens with one of director Brian de Palma's wonderful trademark continuous shots, as we follow Cage around a hotel-casino where it is fight night. Sinise is head of security for the fight which is to have the U.S Secretary of Defence in the crowd. The secretary gets shot and there then follows an investigation lead by Cage which reveals a conspiricy. Sinise joins forces with Cage in the investigation as he feels guilty for the killing as he was head of security. Aside from the fact that the ending, which i wont reveal, is just plain...See less

(02/20/08) Two young people, American Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and French Céline (Julie Delpy) meet on the Budapest - Paris train. They start talking and quickly develop a connection. As they approach Vienna, where Jesse is flying out from the next day, he persuades Céline to spend a day with him in the city, and catch the train to Paris the next day. She agrees, and the two of them spend a magical 24 hours walking around the beautiful city of Vienna, talking about their lives, gradually revealing more of themselves, and falling in love. But as the hours before sunrise slip away, the moment when they will have to say goodbye edges inexorably closer... This is one of my absolute favourite films, it's beautiful, romantic, realistic and humorous all at the same time. The direction and the central performances are outstanding, the story perfectly constructed and the dialogue is both engaging and has a beautiful natural flow. This film is a rare gem to be cherished and watched again and again. Comment |...See less

(02/20/08) Catch Me If You Can tells the incredible true story of a teenage runaway who finds himself alone in the big city and in need of a job. He uses his wit and creativity to live the good life, successfully posing as an airline pilot, physician, and lawyer, and cashing millions of dollars in bad checks, all before he is 18 years old! Leonardo DiCaprio is utterly convincing as teenager Frank Abagnale, Jr. His considerable poise and confidence charm us immediately. Tom Hanks plays the stalwart FBI agent who chases Frank for years, forming an odd bond with him. Christopher Walken plays Frank's troubled father in his typically eerie style. There are many surprises and some chuckles along the way. This is a very enjoyable film about an amazingly resourceful young man. Enjoy! Comment | Permalink | Was this review helpful to you?
