Mix well - do NOT use your brush for this. Tissue paper or rice paper Tea lights (short, stubby candles - the safest kind) Wire mesh (hardware cloth available at the hardware store) Soft wire (florist wire - about 24 gauge) Fishline or strong thin twine A length of thin bamboo (garden stake will do) FOR DECORATION: glitter, leaf skeletons, tissue cutouts, sequins, patterned tissue and paint can be added. Keep in mind that any opaque material such as sequins or glitter will become a black silhouette at night when the lantern is lit from inside. Ribbons and raffia, flowers, streamers etc. can be hung from the bottom of the lantern for an added festive touch. Quick to knit and lovely to look at, it's knit in organic cotton for a soft and sustainable project. Materials: * one skein Lion Brand Organic Cotton (I used color 004, Cypress) or about 80 yards of worsted weight organic cotton of your choice * one pair size 6 US needles * scissors * crochet hook or yarn needle Gauge 18 stitches and 35 rows equal four inches in pattern. Gauge is not critical. Size Finished size is 10 inches square. Here goes, I'm going to try and do this but my computer keeps crashing, if there are any glaring errors I'll put them right asap. Here comes a poor quality photo again, I still haven't sussed out what's wrong with the scanner. Enlarge to whatever size you wish, just measure the length of baby's ( or Mama's ) foot. Cut 4 boot pieces and 2 sole pieces as shown. Now do the same for the lining. The easiest way to do this is to lay your fabric right sides together, and then pin and cut out together. Pin and stitch the sides of each boot ( right sides together) And then stitch the boot to the sole as shown, don't forget to mark the front and back centre points on the soles - it makes it a lot easier to position correctly. Now turn under and press a small hem at the top of each boot and it's lining. Now slot the lining into it's boot with wrong sides together, Finish off with a decorative stitch to close and maybe some yo-yo's. There's a great tutorial at Heather's. I suspect Mummy's have... All this week and maybe into next week, I’ll be posting what I’ve been making these past few weeks. Today, it’s fabric tree decorations. Essentially, each tree consists of four cones stacked on top of each other. Download the Stacked Fabric Christmas Tree templates as an Adobe pdf file or by printing the image here. To make them, download and print out the Adobe pdf file with the templates for the four sized cones. Using the pattern, cut out the four semi-circles from various fabric. I then ironed on some lightweight interfacing to the backside. After you have four semi-circles of fabric, I used a small zig-zag stitch around all the edges. Fold over the edges to make a cone shape. You will overlap the two ends about 1 inch to make the diameter of the size cone you wish. Then I used a straight stitch to close up the backside of the cone. Iron this seam so the cone will stay open in a nice round form. Alternately, you could hand stitch the back seam closed. They're the basic cone concept, only unfilled (so they can be collapsed and put into envelopes for mailing) and stitched up the back with cross stiches. :) I just need to decorate them and then photograph them to share on my blog.
