Veronika Decides to Die (Portuguese Veronika decide morrer) is a novel by Paulo Coelho; it tells the story of 24 year old Veronika, who appears to have everything in life going for her, but who decides to kill herself. This book is partly based on Coelho's experience in various mental institutions (see the biography Confessions of A Pilgrim by Juan Arias). It is based around the subject of madness. The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a coming of age story about a young man who is a wallflower is his own life. While this gives him some startling insight about his friends, he finds that he's not really participating, not really living his own life. As Charlie struggles to get a grip on his increasingly slippery life, tackling such topics as dating, sex, abuse, drugs, abortion and depression, it's his past that may ultimately be his undoing. While Perks of Being a Wallflower may seem a bit unrealistic in a time sense, once you get over the fact that Chbosky essentially condensed the bulk of the highschool experience into one year you'll find the book to be poignant, heartfelt, and always, above all, honest.
