I'd like a GPS unit I can use for backpacking, especially if I ever get to take a trip to the wilderness of the Adirondacks. I was holding out for the Magellan Triton, but now that it's out, reviews are sounding like it's unreliable, and bigger than the eTrex units. So Garmin seems the way to go. Bright screen, great battery life, high accuracy. Digital compass and barometer (for telling direction while standing still, and accurately recording elevation changes). Great reviews all around.

This is the filter we've used on every backpacking trip so far. Works great. Fits large-mouth Nalgenes, small-mouth Nalgenes, bottled-water and Gatorade bottles, and Camelback hoses. Pumps fast, water tastes great. Sometimes hard to keep clean and dirty hoses separate, but that's a small tradeoff.

Fit on my (and Janelle's) hiking poles. Will let them work as snowshoe/cross-country ski poles in deep powder.
