(02/10/08) As a graphic designer I love the idea of this book, namely its declared intent to "restate the value of one color creativity" in a technicolor world. The attractively produced coffee-table work collects the work of some 32 Western European and American designers, presenting about 4-6 examples of their work. There are a few big names, like Sagmeister, Emigre, and Tomato, but most in the book are unknowns to me. Probably that's because I'm mainly interested in functional design, as opposed to design for art's sake. Very few of the projects in the book are identifiable as actual objects. There are a few posters, flyers, a business card, a CD cover, and ridiculous Marilyn Manson photo shoot, but most of the works are typographic masturbation or more abstract collages, best suited for framing and display. This book looked to have clear pictures at a quick glance, and I had high hopes for it. I can't say it completely let me down---I did learn how to knit and purl, but I can almost say I did so in spite of the book's instructions. They seemed to skip really explaining a few crucial things, and the clear photos unfortunately didn't really show these things either. I don't know the technical term, but the book didn't really talk about or show well the step of sliding the yarn off the left needle after doing the wrapping around part. I was trying hard to knit without doing this, and was frustrated nothing seemed to actually get knit. I figured it out more or less by trial and error. I did get a few good tips here---about how to bind off a project and how to make pom-poms. But other techniques I was eager to learn just weren't addressed well. For example, the book says you... There is so much great art in this thing that I can't stop looking at it. Tons of big, colorfull images and artists. I had no idea how huge the world of rock posters had gotten in the last decade or so. Now I want to start collecting them and see them for real. All the poster artist's represented are excellent, but I especially liked Ames Design, Chantry, Coop, Dean, Emek, Ewing, Gink, Hampton, Scrojo, and Sutton. The forward by Art Chantry is a really interesting short history of rock poster art. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes rock posters. Or even art or music in general. The only reason I didn't go with 5 stars is that I wish it had just a few more pages. But it was definitely worth the price. Buy it - you won't regret it! Comment | Was this review helpful to you? The stories suggest mystical meanings and the sections on significance also tell stories, and urge participation ("seek a place of stone under the waning moon"). The 24 runes govern human activities: journeys, exchange, joy, loss, fate, memory, etc. Berk explores etymological links, origins, and natural correspondences. Life lessons, folk wisdom, and psychotherapy all play a role in this user's guide, and if the approach is a trifle portentous and highly poetic, readers are expecting no less.
