(07/14/07) We had the chance to ask Alan Lee a few questions about his illustrative collaboration with the world imagined by J.R.R. Tolkien: Amazon.com: How much of a treat was it to get first crack at depicting entirely new characters rather than ones who had been interpreted many times before? Was there one who particularly captured your imagination? Lee: Although it was a great honor to illustrate The Children of Húrin, the characters and the main elements of the story line are familiar to those who have read The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales, and these narratives have inspired quite a few illustrators. Ted Nasmith has illustrated The Silmarillion and touched on some of the same characters and landscapes. This was the first time that I ventured into the First Age; while working on The Lord of the Rings books and films--and The Hobbit--I've had to refer back to events in Middle-earth history but not really depict them. I'm drawn to characters who bear similarities to the protagonists in...See less

(07/01/07) Book Description It started out as just an exercise. Comic art painter extroardinnaire Alex Ross sketched out some ideas of what some of the greatest Marvel super heroes-Spider-Man, Captain America, the Incredible Hulk-would like in a grim possible future where a terrible experiment has left all ordinary humans with super powers. What would become of the heroes who had been set apart by their strange abilities, which now seemed so commonplace? Thus was born Earth X, one of the strangest and best selling Marvel projects in recent years. Ross' visionary ideas were fleshed out by some of the industries top talents, taking shape in a year-long epic that excited and thrilled comic fans everywhere, and spawned a second series to debut later this year. In an outpost on the Moon, the robot known as X-51 must watch the dark events as they unfold on the Earth, relating them to the alien Watcher-charged with the responsibility of recording all events on Earth-who has now been rendered blind. We...See less

(06/28/07) Forget the hype of the Marvel Civil War; Annihilation is war on a cosmic scale! Who the heck is Nova? I knew little about Richard Rider, the man called Nova, before picking this book up, but Nova is quite possibly the baddest man in the universe. While Iron Man and Captain America fight over petty issues, Nova is fighting a battle to save the Universe from Annihilius of the Negative Zone. Yeah! The same Negative Zone that Mr. Fantastic and Iron Man built a maximum security prison in. Hey Iron Man, way to go chrome dome! Turns out Annihilus is so powerful he was banished to the Negative Zone to keep the universe safe. Building a prison in the Negative Zone seems to have disrupted things, and Annihilus appears on the edge of the Skrull Empire with an armada of ships dubbed the "Annihilation Wave." In the ensuing chaos star systems are destroyed and Xandar, home of Nova Corps, is wiped out. The sole survivor is Richard Rider, who is given the full power of the Nova Force to combat...See less

(06/28/07) Volume 1 of the Marvel "Annihilation" event was a very well done, if flawed, collection that seemed to suffer a tad in direction and art but still managed to present something on a truly epic, universal level. Volume 2 pics right up with its collection. While things are (VERY) slowly coming together, these three mini-arcs are quite superior to the previous volume, despite being less directly involved in the main plot. First off, I'll be frank and say I was never a fan of the Silver Surfer; that has changed. He really impressed me in this mini-series and came across as more than Hollywood Oscar's twin brother. Ronan the Accuser had an interesting presence as well. But both of those pale in comparison to the story of the Super Skrull. Until this book, I had no idea who he was, but he easily steals this entire collection. Few characters in comics come across as so well-developed as Super Skrull does. He is a villain and a hero both at once and every scene he's in makes one pay attention....See less

(06/28/07) This first book is unquestionably the best of the series. What makes it so rewarding is that the history is real on both sides of the story. Yes, as all the other commentators have noted, Andrew Keane and his Maine men are in every way equal in courage and idealism to Colonel Chamberlain and his team from THE KILLER ANGELS. It really is heart-wrenching and inspiring to see the events in this action-packed story give literal meaning to phrases like "we'll fill the vacant ranks with a million freemen more." The book shows that the "battle cry of freedom" was not merely an idealistic wish but a realistic and workable policy. But what no one has noticed is that the book is at least as enlightening on the subject of RUSSIAN history and society. The Tugar hordes are an alien race, but Forstchen's stroke of genius was to make them human by giving them the culture, outlook and capabilities of Genghis Khan's Mongol hordes. Note that this author bucks fifty years of Science Fiction convention...See less

(06/24/07) Book Description "The most consistently brilliant science fiction writer in the world." --John Brunner THE INSPIRATION FOR BLADERUNNER. . . Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? was published in 1968. Grim and foreboding, even today it is a masterpiece ahead of its time. By 2021, the World War had killed millions, driving entire species into extinction and sending mankind off-planet. Those who remained coveted any living creature, and for people who couldn't afford one, companies built incredibly realistic simulacrae: horses, birds, cats, sheep. . . They even built humans. Emigrees to Mars received androids so sophisticated it was impossible to tell them from true men or women. Fearful of the havoc these artificial humans could wreak, the government banned them from Earth. But when androids didn't want to be identified, they just blended in. Rick Deckard was an officially sanctioned bounty hunter whose job was to find rogue androids, and to retire them. But cornered, androids tended to...See less

(08/05/07) Whew! I just finished reading all three of Phillip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" books in a little over a week (I couldn't put them down!), and I'm still trying to absorb all of this. My initial reaction: this is going to be an all-time classic, and certainly not just of "young adult" or "fantasy" books (Phillip Pullman himself has stated many times that he can't read "fantasy," because it "doesn't tell [him] anything interesting about being a human being." While it is certainly different than the "Lord of the Rings," it is NOT AT ALL ridiculous to place Pullman's creation in the same pantheon as Tolkien's, which is something I swear I never thought that I would say. Anyway, the bottom line is that this trilogy is an amazing, mind-blowing, fascinating, exciting, heartbreaking, work of transcendent brilliance, and it starts with the story of Lyra, somewhat inaccurately titled, "The Golden Compass" (I guess that sounds better than "The Alethiometer" or "Lyra vs. the Gobblers" or...See less
