(11/19/07) I've been a fan of Tapping the Vein for some time now, ever since first hearing their music [...] and seeing their live shows. It was quite a thrill to finally buy their first full-length album, and it was well worth the wait. This is a band with the right mixture of musical talent and emotion to make it big in the gothic/electronic scene. [...] and adding in their own touch of melancholic beauty, they've created an album that is bound to satisfy. The reworked version of "Butterfly" takes the original and ups the musical ante, using more sonic experimentation and just improving an already wonderful song. The same can be said for "Beautiful," "Everything," "Broken," and "Falling In," all songs from the previous two EPs that gave the band a name. Aside from that, we have six new songs that show the band continuing on the path that their fans know and love, while at the same time expanding on it. The electronics are lush and even more present, but without overpowering the organic element...See less

(11/19/07) The Cruxshadows have been around for a little while, and have thus had time to perfect and hone their musical talent. This newest release shows off how they've evolved as a band, as well as how creative they can be. The Cruxshadows really have revolutionized the trip-hop genre by taking this musical style and molding it to be something entirely their own. They have taken an older, very characteristically 80's sound and added sumptuous layers that reek of eclecticism, but in a good way! Omnipresent throughout Ethernaut are lushly rich textures complemented by outstanding lyrics and vocals. Aside from the characteristically "trip-hop"/EBM electronic and highly danceable beats, Ethernaut is sprinkled with the gorgeous sounds of violins and guitars. Though this combination seems like it would clash caustically, the Cruxshadows pull it all together quite well into a most delectable treat for the receptive ear. A lot of the creative talent found in this group stems from Rogue (how very...See less

(11/19/07) Midnight Syndicate Vampyre:Symphonies from the Crypt Mike Ventarola... It is no surprise that the vampire theme holds a great appeal for many people, particularly due to the metaphoric nature that can depict man and addiction or man as an outsider from the norm. Vampyre adds a bit more than just your garden-variety spooky cliche. There are clearly demarcations of bittersweet memories, dark seductiveness and forlorn emotions interwoven with some of the creepy elements. It is though we get a sense of the "life" of our undead travelers that flitter by in a subconscious way. Without any authored prose or spoken dialogue to set the scenes, as in previous releases, the macabre elements are given a three-dimensional aspect of the vampyric characters, deftly created via the utilization of sound alone. From the dark tones of the opening track "Awakening," through the funereal style "Unhallowed Ground," right through the last track "Vampyre," we are provided with a first hand voyeuristic...See less

(11/19/07) If Tim Burton remade the film 'Alice In Wonderland', 'Chasing The Ghost' would be the soundtrack. With its slow, melodic pace and electronic dissonant sound evoking a near trance-state, the listener is progressively hypnotized with each successive track moving you deeper and deeper into a dreamy, surreal world of multi-layered shadow. KaRIN is not so much singing, but whispering to us to follow her on a journey down the rabbit hole. It has a somewhat disquieting affect, as though someone else is listening in and she doesn't want them to hear. All -10 tracks- work well together as they seamlessly weave there way through the ever-shifting darkness. I particularily enjoyed -track 4- 'Dreamsleep', -track 5- 'White Rabbit' (great cover of the Jefferson Airplane classic) and -track 8- 'Monochrome.' So turn out the lights and sit back and enjoy. No need to light any candles, the Cheshire Cat will arrive shortly and his glowing eyes and wide, mocking grin will provide all the illumination...See less

(11/19/07) The Dreamside strike me as the female counterpart to Rammstein. Not exactly mind you, but there are parts scattered throughout Spin Moon Magic that just scream Rammstein. Other than that I'm extremely impressed with Spin Moon Magic. At times there's almost an epic feel but then there's times where it seems they're striving for nothing more than recognition in the radio world. That's also forgiveable seeing as how the strong vocals of Kemi and the excellent job the rest of the band does at creating soundscapes in each song. Spin Moon Magic was my first venture into the world of The Dreamside so naturally it took some getting use to. After all, The Dreamside aren't exactly conventional in their approach to each song. Forsaken for instance, is one of the more catchy genre bridging songs featured; but then the very next song, The Feast Is Set, is miles apart from Forsaken, both musically and vocally. So to say they stick to their guns would be as false as saying Britney Spears actually...See less

(11/19/07) Morrissey has released as many compilations as he has proper albums, and this one covers his entire work from 1988's "Viva Hate" through 1997's "Maladusted." The familiar tunes are here, including "Suedehead," "November Spawned..," "The More You Ignore Me..," and "The Last of the Famous..." But some other key songs are also missing. I'd gladly trade in "Do Your Best and Don't Worry" for the excellent "Will Never Marry" or "I Can Have Both." Plus, I'd be happy to see "The Loop" or "Pregnant for the Last Time" in exchange for the album track "Glamorous Glue." Most notable of all, "Ouija Board" is not present on this disc, proving that Morrissey has since grown truly embarrassed by this song. Nevertheless, this is an overall fine collection of tunes from one of the UK's last great poets. Comment | Permalink | Was this review helpful to you? (Report this)See less

(11/19/07) We find Poe on her second album brazen and boundlessly inspired, flexing her creative range with more quality ideas than can possibly be crammed into seventeen songs and a half-dozen genres. I read an interview on how this amazing disc came about. Finding herself at a loose end creatively after her first album, Poe describes an unsettling dream where her late father mysteriously urges her to "find his voice". Some time later she unearthed a forgotten box of family tapes dating from early childhood, featuring a revelatory array of personal voice recordings by none other than her often remote and complex Dad. Confronting the material wasn't easy at first. Then "suddenly I had 700 songs I needed to write, all of them at my fingertips". Talk of a concept album alarmed her backers, who suggested she "capitalize on her fan base" instead. Undaunted, Poe withdrew to a private studio and cozied up with her ProTools digital audio workstation, throwing 12-16 hours a day into the quintessential...See less

(11/19/07) Claire Voyant is actually a three person group that consists of Victoria Lloyd (vocals), Chris Ross (programming), and Ben Fargen (guitars). Together they create some amazing songs and weave a certain magic that's continually felt in their music that's haunting yet profoundly rich with elegance. 'Time and the Maiden' is a brilliant album all around and of course it's going to be hard to beat but I'm glad they didn't try to duplicate what can't be repeated. It's good to experiment, and while it doesn't always work to their advantage I applaud musicians for attempting new ways to evolve as an artist. They haven't strayed too terribly far from their original sound (they still venture into dreamy electronica) but most of the material heard on 'Love Is Blind', which I admit took a long time to grow on me, is a bit more upbeat than usual with ethereal "pop" sensibilities. Victoria's singing is also more airy here, which I find to be gorgeous on "Abyss", in particular; however, I still find...See less

(11/19/07) Lunascape is a Belgium group that needs more global attention. Most people don't even know them unless they've had a chance to hear "Lane Navichi" from the great IMAX 3D film "Haunted Castle". "Reminiscences" is a best-of compilation album, collecting songs from "Reflecting Seyelence" and "Mindstalking", the groups first two albums. "Mindstalking" is still available, though the CD single is more dominant and comes up the most in Net searches. "Reflecting" is impossible to find now on the web, at least it was when I recently did an extensive search for the album. So, having "Reminiscenes" is great, but for a compilation, it should have had every song from the last two albums on it instead of just 12 tracks. At least these are excellent songs, with "Lane Navichi" and "Tears From The Moon" being the best (in my opinion). Kyoko Baertsoen has a powerfully beautiful voice. At times, she sounds similiar to Dolores O'Riordan from "The Cranberries", other times like Sinead O'Connor, then you...See less

(11/19/07) Blue Stone's ethereal paradise is sensual and spiritual with vocal labyrinths in which to wander like a mist seeping through stillness. This is music in which to lose yourself and every stress you imagined you had before you put on your headphones. The heights and the depths of this album are all completely satisfying. If you love Delerium, Sleepthief or Evening Ocean, I think you will sink into this album, turn up the volume and dissolve into the sensation of sound. Breathe is magical and sexy with sensual whispery lyrics rich with lush gothic and world music appeal. ~The Rebecca Review Comment | Permalink | Was this review helpful to you? (Report this)See less

(11/19/07) i found this little gem the other day in a used cd bin and i felt like i had literally struck gold. finally we have a goth cd which isn't so....goth and that's a contradiction in terms. for all those who can't seem to get enough of old cocteau twins albums or mazzy star will relish after hearing regina sosinksky's beautiful yet haunting vocals on this fantastic album. unfortunately, i have no specific tracks at this time to recommend but i hardly think this one will disappoint any goth fans or music lovers who can appreciate a lovely female voice time and time again. i will definately purchase their other cd entitled apart sometime in the near future. i also recommend tanya donnelly's cd beautysleep which i can't stop playing in addition to the mira cd. happy listening !!! (11/19/07) Sara McLachlan-esque breathy, ethereal, yet powerful vocals get a trip-hop spin from Daughter Darling, and it's a case of two great tastes that taste great together. DJ Infiniti's non-intrusive scratching raises the group's moody, folkish, Celtic-tinged singing and tunes from the list of Lachlan-wannabes and helps the group stake out territory of its own. However, the album is not so trip-hoppy that I think it would only appeal to fans of that unjustly overlooked subgenre; the voice and piano work are strong enough to carry the album even without the edge Infiniti provides. The album is consistent in quality all the way through, with numerous highlights, and is enjoyable enough to sustain repeated listens. But beware of listening too carefully: the quality of the music exceeds the quality of the lyrics, and you'll start to notice if you concentrate too hard. The best way to listen to this album is to lie back let it wash over you without reflecting on it too much. Let Daughter Darling...See less

(11/19/07) About the Artist Hard to categorize, easy to listen to. Breathy female vocals overflowing with emotion, both positive and negative, expertly conveying the triumph of survival and the anguish of damage expressed in the lyrics. Musically, similar to Curve in their ability to utilize both ethereal/trip hop and straight up rock-n-roll elements. Product Description Ego Likeness continue to build on their musical foundation as they did with their 2004 release "Water to the Dead." Some downtempo tracks recall their "Dragonfly" release, but as with Water, this disc is more eclectic. Aviary is a slow, dangerous, smouldering, slithering track that may well be the best Ego Likeness song to date. However, uptempo rockers like Severine and Burn Witch Burn are well represented on this album as well. Fans of Curve and Collide should continue to enjoy new Ego Likeness material, but this is certainly a band that is blazing its own trail. Also includes the first-ever Ego Likeness video, "Aviary."See less

(11/19/07) Xxon Mill's REVIEW at igloomag.com :: (02.10.06) In this forbidden land of blips, metal sounds and splintered beats, we move through the dark-lands, carrion calling, for some new frequencies, something to implode in the distance, and make us stand up and take notice that something unique was set off here. Fate and purpose now have a new name: Android Lust. The new album, Devour, Rise and Take Flight simply defies description. The wonderfully warped, mind-bending assault is strangely cohesive in that we are walking though the mind of Shikhee, writer, performer and creator of Android Lust. Pushing the barrier forward, this new record takes us into new and refreshing territory. "Wicked Days" first caught my ear as a captivating track, with so much feeling and depth upon hearing it once, I immediately wanted to hear it again. "Fell The Empty Mask" was another crystal heart track for me (crystal heart means honest, cold and brutal). "Memory Game" is another fantastic track with a great line...See less
