Beauty Tip of the Week: Slam Dunk

Posted by jinnyjinn on May 15, 2009
We’re bracing for a heat wave here in the Bay Area, and although it sure is nice to kick off summer with a scorcher, it can wreak havoc on my ability to apply makeup in the morning. Sweat glands go into overdrive—particularly on my upper lip and forehead—making it damned-near impossible to keep concealer in place. But a while back I read a trick for shutting down the sweat and improving the staying power of your cosmetics. After washing your face, take a salad bowl (or any large bowl) from your kitchen cupboard and fill with cold water along with some ice cubes. Simply dunk your entire face in and hold it there until you need to pop up for air. The cold water closes up pores and keeps makeup from melting minutes after application. It’s worked like a charm for me every time!

  • Heh, Joan Crawford does this at the beginning of Mommie Dearest.Milk of Magnesia is good for (quite) oily skin. Report Spam Posted by cristina at 3:30 PM on 05/15/09

  • Wow- I cannot wait to try this! There's nothing more frustrating than sweating off all your makeup before you leave the house. Report Spam Posted by stellastylista at 3:34 PM on 05/15/09

  • My makeup tip is how to avoid a facelift later in life. ALWAYS, wash your face, apply makeup, sunscreen etc. in an upward motion. It may sound silly, but if you use a downward motion day after day you are really helping gravity take a toll. Report Spam Posted by paws72 at 5:29 PM on 05/15/09

  • @paws72 - WOW! I never thought of that! Thanks! Report Spam Posted by jinnyjinn at 5:41 PM on 05/15/09

  • @paws72: Great point. I am always especially careful when removing eye makeup since the skin around the eyes is so sensitive. Report Spam Posted by mamor at 7:59 PM on 05/15/09

  • ooh thanks for the tip, plus makeup i have figured would seriously run for me because i sweat... a lot! Report Spam Posted by zippers at 2:53 PM on 05/22/09

  • I hate to be the bearer of bad news but there's no way that dunking your face in ice water would make your makeup stay on longer. Even if pores close up, they will reopen once you start sweating. I'd skip the ice and buy a primer. Report Spam Posted by ckalaydjian at 10:35 AM on 05/27/09

  • @ckalaydjian - I'm all about primer, too :) This has definitely worked for me on hot days. My makeup does stay on better and longer. But like anything--it may not be for everyone. Report Spam Posted by jinnyjinn at 10:48 AM on 05/27/09

  • @jinnyjinn - great idea! Your makeup can't do its job if you can't get it onto a good, clean, dry face. Report Spam Posted by alicatstrut at 11:54 AM on 05/27/09
