Meenakshi's experience with chanting began in 1988 on her first trip to India to study with Swami Shyam. Her background was in the performing arts,but her Bhakti (devotion) for God came through her experiences of meditation and chanting. She recorded her first Cd of Sanskrit chants in India is July 200 entitled "Prayers". Since then she has been leading kirtan,chanting workshops and classes, meditation,yoga philosophy, Sanskrit and Ashtanga Yoga in Canada and the U.S. Her voice has a sweet, ethereal and open-hearted quality, full of devotion and surrender. She is currently leading Kirtan in Toronto and the U.S. (under the group name "SWAHA") with her partner and keyboardist Ron Reid, co-founder of Downward Dog Yoga Centre. Did you ever just want to pop in a relaxing CD at the end of a long day? If so, Swaha’s newest CD “Bolo!” is a great choice to soothe your soul. Taking hints of Indian mantras and spiritual music, Swaha does a magnificent job with their newest disc. Vocalists Dave Stringer and Tara MacLean serve up some excellent performances on this CD. The balance of Dave’s vocal tone with Tara’s angelic pitch is easy on any listener’s ears. As for the music, the raga flare sets the mood for some beautiful sounds on songs like “Shiva Manas Puja” and “Jaya Ram Shri Ram.” Another great feature of “Bolo!” is the pop sound that is delivered on many of the songs including “Govinda Gopala.” Swaha has taken the mantra/Indian genres to a whole different level, fusing India’s musical roots with traditional pop instrumentation. “Bolo!” is a perfect listen for anyone who enjoys Indian music fused with spiritual and uplifting textures. A life-long obsession with sound has guided Alanna in the direction of music and vibration. Through the teachings of yoga, she has found a home for her spirit within the pulsations of the heart. She was born with a hearing impairment, but was taught from an early age that this is neither a setback or a difference, it is a way to thrive and shine, and so she has, becoming a vocalist, a teacher, a musician, a writer, and a lover of music, sound, meditation, inspiration and vibration.
