(02/20/12) Though not as adventurous in time signature explorations as the other recordings the classic Brubeck Quartet made in their series of "Time" recordings, this album is nonetheless a sublime gem. On this session, one of the most cohesive groups in the history of jazz exalts in its ability to swing mightily while retaining an intimate, hushed atmosphere. Dave's compositions, while seemingly simple compared to earlier pieces like "Strange Meadowlark" and "Unsquare Dance", and the later "Crescent City Stomp", belie the group's deftness at negotiating the considerable challenge of transforming the simple to the sublime. On "Softly, William, Softly" and "Forty Days", two of Brubeck's most beautiful themes, Desmond carves out solos so perfect, each note so carefully chosen and executed, yet so bursting with pure spontaneity, that they stand alongside anything composed, edited and honed by the best of jazz composers. It sounds so effortless it's easy for a casual listener to either write it off...See less

(12/29/10) Published on the eve of the fiftieth anniversary of the debut of La Dolce Vita, this is the most authoritative survey ever of Federico Fellini’s complete oeuvre. This definitive and important contribution on Federico Fellini chronicles the body of work of one of the most influential and revered directors of all time, and one of Italy’s most important modern cultural icons. It features the great director’s own drawings, sketches, storyboards, notes, and commentary along with behind-the-scenes photographs—both on set and off—and covers each film from the entire span of his career. Largely never before published, the material collected in this lavishly illustrated volume is drawn primarily from the archives of the Fellini Foundation and from the Fellini family’s private collection. (12/11/09) "France once embodied the crowning glory of culinary art, but the most serious gastronomes today turn increasingly elsewhere for inspiration. Because French foods hegemony was simply assumed as little as two decades ago, Steinberger marvels at this precipitous decline in Gallic reputation. His investigation finds manifold causes for this state of affairs." Booklist One of the greatest books Ive read. Marco Pierre White "In Au Revoir To All That, Mike Steinberger pulls off the magic trick of throwing a funeral you want to go to: The elegy is unflinching but heartfelt and celebratory; the guests are the most interesting people; the food (and wine) couldn't get any better; andget thisthe deceased shows signs of rising again." (08/17/09) These delightful playing cards showcase the baroque work of Jacques "Iacopo" Callot (1592 - 1635), a printmaker, etcher and draftsman. During his lifetime, Callot created over 1,400 brilliantly detailed etchings that chronicled the life of his period, featuring soldiers, clowns, drunkards, gypsies, beggars, as well as court life, mostly done in the “burlesque” style which was popular at the time. Though French by birth, Callot apprenticed in Rome and lived in Florence from 1612-1621, studying with the master etcher Antonio Tempesta. During his period in Florence he became an independent master, and worked often for the Medici court. These traditional playing cards depict Callot’s colorful etchings, faithfully reproduced by Antonio Marra of Papier Arti & Mestieri in Florence. Each set comes with two complete decks, charmingly boxed and tied with raffia. An ideal Italian gift; an eyeItalia favorite.See less

(08/04/09) Product Description Wright's collaboration with Craig Street continues on The Orchard. While her prior releases boasted contributions from some of the jazz world's most respected jazz players, The Orchard features an eclectic cast that includes noted singer/songwriter Toshi Reagon, who co-wrote several songs with Wright; Calexico members Joey Burns and John Convertino; avant-guitar hero Oren Bloedow; longtime Bob Dylan sideman Larry Campbell; Ollabelle member Glenn Patscha; and guest vocalists Catherine Russell and Marc Anthony Thompson (aka Chocolate Genius). The Orchard's fluid, intimate performances reflect the unpretentious spirit in which the music was created. The project actually began with a set of photographs taken by Wright in her rural hometown, focusing on the orchard of the title, a setting that she's known since childhood. That organic approach was maintained throughout the recording process, which took place at studios in upstate New York's Catskill mountains, in Tucson,...See less

(06/14/09) Review "Italian food guru David Downie wrote the recently published Food Wine Rome. It's an insightful and lovingly written guide to my former home town one of Italy's great food capitals. He starts out with some important definitions of classic Roman treats like local bitter vegetables, goes into 33 ways to order some of the best coffee you will ever drink and highlights some of the region's top wine producers...The bulk of Downie's book focuses on restaurants, wine bars and food shops of this food-crazed town." --The Examiner (San Francisco) "Getting to the heart of regional cuisine can be a tall order, but The Terroir Guides ably examine the interplay between markets, local food artisans, winemakers, and chefs on a town-by-town basis, taking the reader from field to plate and making a great companion for any food-obsessed tourist...packed with local history, food lore, and useful translations." --Sherman's Travel When I travel, food is naturally a primary focus, but most guidebooks...See less

(05/31/09) You may well be a geek, always sitting there on the internets all day, as Grandma says, but you can geek out in style with this adorably cute mouse pad. This is the officially licensed mouse-pad featuring an excellent illustration by The Black Apple. The watermark will NOT be on the actual product, obviously. Also, the mouse pad is ROUND, just to be clear! And, one more thing, the picture is zoomed in a bit so it looks a bit fuzzy, but it isn't fuzzy or blurry in real life! These aren't by one of those huge, faceless companies that print on demand. Nope. I make these myself and I have a face and it is smiling over being able to make such fun! These are PROFESSIONAL quality. The nicest, thickest mousepads available. The mouse pad measures 7.5 inches in diameter and is nearly 1/4 inch thick with a rubber base. You will LOVE it. I just know it. I take Paypal and Visa/MC/AMEX and Discover. You can send a check, but shipping will be delayed for up to 1 week. Please remember to include...See less

(02/13/08) Amazon.com When Jeffrey Steingarten was made food critic of Vogue in 1989, he began by systematically learning to like all the food he had previously avoided. From clams to Greek food to Indian desserts with the consistency of face cream, Steingarten undertook an extraordinary program of self-inflicted behavior modification to prepare himself for his new career. He describes the experience in this collection's first piece, before setting out on a series of culinary adventures that take him around the world. It's clear that Vogue gave Steingarten carte blanche to write on whatever subjects tickled his taste buds, and the result is a frequently hilarious collection of essays that emphasize good eating over an obsession with health. "Salad, the Silent Killer" is a catalog of the toxins lurking in every bowl of raw vegetables, while "Fries" follows a heroic attempt to create the perfect French fry--cooked in horse fat. Whether baking sourdough bread in his Manhattan loft or spraying miso...See less

(02/03/08) Amazon.com Amazon Significant Seven, January 2008: Food is the one thing that Americans hate to love and, as it turns out, love to hate. What we want to eat has been ousted by the notion of what we should eat, and it's at this nexus of hunger and hang-up that Michael Pollan poses his most salient question: where is the food in our food? What follows in In Defense of Food is a series of wonderfully clear and thoughtful answers that help us omnivores navigate the nutritional minefield that's come to typify our food culture. Many processed foods vie for a spot in our grocery baskets, claiming to lower cholesterol, weight, glucose levels, you name it. Yet Pollan shows that these convenient "healthy" alternatives to whole foods are appallingly inconvenient: our health has a nation has only deteriorated since we started exiling carbs, fats--even fruits--from our daily meals. His razor-sharp analysis of the American diet (as well as its architects and its detractors) offers an inspiring...See less
