They are called solvents when used to dissolve solids such as a varnish resin crystals, and a thinner when used to dilute liquids such as painting mediums. Solvents such as turpentine and mineral spirits are natural based products, whereas paint thinners are most often synthetic variations. All solvents and thinners should be used in a well-ventilated area, even when classified as "odorless". Paint solvents are used to clean brushes, just like mineral spirits and turpentine. But mineral spirits and turpentine cannot be used or combined with polymer clay in the same process to create Polyclaylic paint. This little bag is 4.5 inches long, 3 inches high and 2 inches deep, just right for a lipstick and a compact (or better still, lots of sweets). 1. Choose your fabric. This is a great project for showing off a teensy piece of fabric. This is a Japanese fabric bought from nuno.plus - I’m guessing I’ll be able to squeeze three little boxy pouches from one fat quarter. Bargain!! 2. Cut two rectangles measureing 8 inches by 6 inches. The longer length is the top. Turn under a half inch on each piece and press, this is where you’ll be fitting the zip. 3. I like to use zips that are more than long enough, I find it easier to sew them in when the zip pull is well and truly out of the way. At long last! The Vintage Pillowcase Lunchbox Tutorial is complete. You'll find a link in the right sidebar to a downloadable pdf. Like the others, it's kind of a big file and may take a minute or two to download. I included some tips/suggestions in the tutorial (probably more than anyone needs or wants, actually) but I also wanted to mention a couple of things here: First of all, you'll want to take a good look at your pillowcase before you cut it. The tutorial assumes your pillowcase is about 20" x 30". It's fine if it's not those exact dimensions. Given the order of the cutting directions, a smaller pillowcase will simply result in a smaller placemat, not a smaller bag. You'll also want to take a look at the "header". (I don't know of a better word for it, but I'm talking about the folded part at the opening.) I've noticed that the size of this piece varies pretty widely among pillowcases. I have been working on making some more cloth napkins like the ones that I made in October. (Wow, this year really is flying by…) Of course the new ones are still sitting on my works in progress pile, but I will hopefully finish those up soon. In the meantime I thought I would share a little tutorial on how to make these (this is my very first tutorial ever too, so bear with me:). If you are looking for a last minute, quick to make Christmas gift I think these would make a great gift… (You can click on any of the photos for a larger view.) Step One: Cut a 14 x 14 inch square piece of fabric for each napkin that you want to make. Step Two: This step is optional, but I highly recommend it since I think it makes everything go a bit quicker. Sew a line a little less than 1/4 an inch from the edges. The Disappearing 9 Patch block is great. Very easy to make, but looks quite impressive when done! I first discovered it in a book called "Magic Pillows, Hidden Quilts" by Karin Hellaby. I've since seen it on line in various places and using different names. Here's a little tutorial on how to make a scrappy version. Firstly - select and stitch together 9 squares. For maximum contrast try and get 5 darker prints and 4 lighter prints arranged with the darker prints as the X of the 9 patch. Square this up, then cut through the block both vertically and horizontally. (My starting squares were 4", so I squared up to 11", then cut to make each new block 5.5".) Turn blocks to rearrange pattern. This is my finished incuabtor sized quilt which used 3 of the original 9 patch blocks. Easy peasey!! See less

Supplies: #2 Pencil, ball-point ink pen, linoleum cutters, paper, ink pad and rubber printing block. 1. Draw your image onto a piece of paper with #2 pencil. When you are happy with your image, go over again with pencil to make sure the lines are strong and dark. If you want to do a very simple image, you can draw directly onto the rubber printing block with a pen and skip to step 4. 2. Now transfer this image onto the rubber printing block by putting image face down onto block and rub with pencil. You will have a backwards image. This is especially important when using images with words, letters or numbers. 3. Once the image has transferred, go over penciled lines with ink pen. This will give you a good image to carve around. 4. Now start carving using the smallest cutter (size 1) and carefully go around all the lines. Make sure you... See less

A few days ago I posted about my cassette tape wallet and how it’s held up over the past 10 months, and I promised a tutorial. Well here it is! First you need to get your hands on a cassette tape. For my first wallet I already had those at my house, but for this one I ordered them from American Science and Surplus. These ones were screwed together, so it was super easy to take them apart. My first one was glued together, so I had to carefully pry the pieces apart with a flat head screw driver. If you have to separate your tape like this, be very careful. I cracked one in half because I was trying to rush it Some are glued up pretty good. Here are the pieces together. The zipper is 9 inches and I just placed the two pieces of the tape over the inside fabric to see how big it had to be. I was flattered that she asked and thought well, why not! I've discovered that there's a variety of methods to this technique. I will show you exactly how I did this one and along the way I will give you some alternate methods and a few links where you can learn more. I suggest you experiment with them all and see which one works best for you. Here we go:1. I began by printing out my image on an inkjet printer. I have heard that the transfer techique works best with a freshly printed image. Unfortuantely, I can't tell you whether this actually makes any difference or not because the copy I used was printed out the same day I did the transfer. I suggest you print out several copies of the image you want to use to allow for any experimentation and/or screw-ups that might occur. This is a tutorial for those of you who want to make your own rubber stamps. Handcarved rubber stamps are quite satisfying to make and you can easily create and carve out your own design. First, you'll need a few things: I'm using the tracing paper method because it's cleaner and easy to adjust the clip art to your liking. So, there's tracing paper, clip art, carving material, and a carving tool. The material I'm using here is Speedy Stamp, aka the "Pink Stuff" from Speedball. Speedy Stamp is easy to carve and prints quite well. It's also easy to mount to a block. There are a variety of carving material out there, so find the one you like best. I'm also using Speedball's linoleum carving set. It comes with a set of carvers in various sizes, 1 being the smallest for fine lines to 5, which is useful for scooping out excess material. Keep a piece of paper under your work surface as you will accumulate carved out pieces and slivers of the Speedy Stamp. Some people can use an exacto knife,... See less

Mmmm, fresh Laurentien pencil crayons and brand new ultra fine point pens. This weekend I was motivated to put together a new sewing tutorial and what better project than a swank pencil case! This one will go perfectly in my quilting designs binder. (As always, click the photos to embiggen. For more detailed photos check my flickr set) Here's what you'll need: * piece of vinyl cut to 10" x 10" * scraps of vinyl for your motif of choice and for your sewing tension swatch * 8" zipper * exacto knife * rotary cutter * zipper foot * 3/8" grommets * painter's tape 1. With a pencil, mark off the zipper placement on the backside of the vinyl by drawing a line at 4" in from the edge and another line at 4 and 1/3." I've been making wristlets for ages now and I thought I'd share my recipe since they're appearing with less frequency in the Splityarn shop (that'll happen after you make 80 gazillion of something.) I wasn't really thinking about it when I started, but choosing (notoriously hard to photograph) red as a key component to the project made for some challenging photo edits. My apologies that the pics aren't quite up to snuff. I'm only posting the basic pictures here, but there's more detailed photos and notes in the accompanying flickr tutorial set. For this project you'll need: 7" zipper 2 pieces of fabric (an outer fabric and one for the lining) zipper foot (optional, but worth the investment) 1" bias tape maker (optional) From the outer fabric cut 2 pieces 8" x 6.5" and one piece 10.5" x 1.25" From the inner fabric cut 2 pieces 8" x 6.5" 1.
