(08/18/09) Nobody steals the spotlight when Maria Callas is onstage, but Tito Gobbi never lets us forget that this show is called Rigoletto, not Gilda. Neither singer has one of the century's prettiest voices; both have dramatic presence, impact, and subtlety--based as much on their control of verbal nuance as on musicianship--that make their characters three-dimensional, the story meaningful, the emotions real, varied, and intense. His role is bigger and more complex than hers is. He is almost constantly onstage, and his music runs the whole gamut from fatherly tenderness, to regret at a life gone wrong, to explosive rage. Sparks fly when they sing together, and Tullio Serafin conducts with an exemplary grasp of the opera and a detailed knowledge of his cast's capabilities. --Joe McLellanSee less

(08/18/09) Maria Callas surprised some fans when this recording appeared in 1958 by singing some of Rosina's music in the mezzo-soprano range. Originally used by Rossini, the mezzo range helped Callas in characterizing Rosina not as a bird-brained, twittering, helpless ingenue but as a crafty, intelligent woman, smarter than any of the men around her (even the resourceful Figaro). Callas's Rosina knew exactly what she wanted and how she would get it. It is a brilliant performance, made even more enjoyable by the first-class contributions of Tito Gobbi, Luigi Alva, and Alceo Galliera. --Joe McLellanSee less

(08/18/09) * Stars Maria Callas, Renato Cioni, Tito Gobbi, Robert Bowman, Dennis Wicks * Directors: Franco Zeffirelli * Synopsis Few of Maria Callas's performances were filmed, so these two gala concerts recorded at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, in 1962 and 1964 are special. On 4 November 1962, it was before an excited audience that she appeared unexpectedly in a live television transmission of a concert with several other performers. She was in excellent vocal condition, which reassured her fans, who had heard rumors that she was vanishing from the stage to be with Aristotle Onassis or because her voice was failing. Callas sings "Tu che le vanita" from Verdi's Don Carlo and the flirtatious gypsy girl's role in the Habanera and the Seguedille from Bizet's Carmen. In 1963 Callas occasionally recorded for EMI in Paris, but her last triumph was her appearance in Puccini's Tosca at Covent Garden in 1964. The director was Franco Zeffirelli and singing in the role of Scarpia was baritone Tito...See less

(08/18/09) Although La Gioconda has practically slipped out of the repertory these days, the title role ranks with Tosca and La Traviata among Maria Callas's essential recorded performances. As the biggest success of composer Amilcare Ponchielli's career, La Gioconda was also virtually the only opera to challenge Giuseppe Verdi's monopoly on the Italian stage in the second half of the 19th century. It has all the passion, melody, spectacle, and drama that an opera lover could wish for -- with a plot that's inscrutable on paper but makes perfect sense when the music takes charge. Still, it takes a soprano like Callas for the opera to really ignite, and that's precisely what happens on this classic 1959 recording from La Scala. There are many fine moments: the tenor aria "Cielo e mar," longingly sung by Pier Miranda Ferraro; a richly characterized performance by mezzo Fiorenza Cossotto as Laura (Gioconda's rival for the tenor); and the delicious "Dance of the Hours," distracting us for a few...See less

(08/18/09) "Callas IS Carmen" was the original ad slogan for this recording when it was released in 1964, toward the end of the diva's stage career. Carmen is the role that one perhaps most regrets that she never essayed on stage, for her personal charisma and acting abilities no doubt would have resulted in a memorable live characterization. That being said, what remains? Despite the fact that Carmen is a mezzo role, and was thus a wise choice for Callas in her vocal estate at that time, there are uncomfortable moments--unsteadiness on forte held notes near the top of the staff, and a pervasive inability to sing softly above a certain point. Her powers of vocal characterization are undiminished, but one misses a certain amount of charm and sexiness that, for example, Victoria de los Angeles effortlessly brings to the role in _her_ classic recording. Nevertheless, in common with all of her work, Callas' interpretation is a commanding accomplishment. Her supporting cast is very strong--Don Jose is...See less

(08/18/09) Little can be added to what's been written about this landmark recording, except that Walter Legge's 1953 mono production yields nothing to modern Tosca recordings for vivacity and theatrical impact--especially Maria Callas's. The miraculous Victor de Sabata conjures up a vibrant, inspiring orchestral canvas that enables Callas and her stellar cohorts to work their magic. Tito Gobbi and Callas spur each other on to heights in which the characters take over from the singers in the listener's mind. Giuseppe Di Stefano is on his best behavior, and in fresher voice than on his fine Leontyne Price-Herbert von Karajan remake. On this set, EMI includes texts, translations, and notes that discuss this recording in the context of Callas's mercurial career. --Jed DistlerSee less
