THERE must be something fabulously optimistic about us Brits. How else, given our unpredictable weather, can you explain our love affair with convertibles? BMW is the latest to tempt us with a mobile sun-trap. Its new 3-Series Convertible has BMW’s first retractable hard top, effectively making it two cars in one – coupé and open top. It also gives it an advantage over nearly all its competition, of which only the Volvo C70 has a folding hard top. The first models to arrive are the 325 and 335, both with six-cylinder, 3.0-litre petrol engines (although the latter boasts two turbos), with 218bhp and 306bhp respectively. The 335 is the high performance option, getting from 0 to 60mph in 5.8 seconds but still returning a respectable 28.5mpg fuel economy. The 325 returns a more palatable 35.8mpg and later in the summer the entry level 320 and the turbo-diesel 330d will return more than 40mpg. But the chances are you will be more interested in looks, and the 3-Series is a thing of beauty.... See less

They have been around for decades. Usually though, they came separate from the car. Motorists had to manually install them in the fall and remove them in the spring. This might have been a pain but the advantages are obvious -- a warmer and quieter car with less wear and tear on the roof fabric. But today, consumers can have the best of both worlds. Today's hardtops stay on the car at all times and the power tops retract quietly and quickly with the touch of a button. Suddenly, you have an all-season car instead of a one-season car. The BMWs should provide a sportier driving experience than the more-expensive but less-powerful Lexus and the front-wheel-drive Volvo. CAPSULE REVIEW Based as it is on the preceding E46 model platform, and equipped with the superseded but still smooth 184-hp, 2.5-liter inline six, the 325i convertible and its M3 variant continue more or less unchanged. Three exterior colors (two blues and a green) have been replaced. Minor face lifts over the years have brought the 325i convertible more into line with the current BMW look, yet it retains the classic appeal of what many people consider the best-looking 3-series ever. Nobody ever complained about its sporty handling, least of all us, but the power now feels somewhat marginal when being put down through the five-speed automatic. We prefer the six-speed manual. BMW’s SMG option is not offered in 2006. The beauty of the convertible is that you can fully appreciate the sophisticated exhaust note as you patrol the boulevards with the top down. See less

BMW has announced that the upcoming 3 Series hardtop convertible will make its debut on January 7th at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Hardtop convertibles are becoming the trend in higher-end models due to better weather handling capability and top-up rigidity than soft tops. BMW is not about to be different and has chosen to go with a hardtop for the next 3 Series convertible. The top opens in 22 seconds and closes in 23, according to BMW. A new kind of specially treated leather that reflects sun rays is unique to the convertible. This leather is used on the seats and armrests to lower surface temperatures during hot days. BMW says that when used on dark interiors, this leather can lower surface temperatures by as much as a whopping 68 degrees. BMW also added a new "convertible" mode to the climate control settings that is available with the top down.
