And in the case of the Inspiron 1420, Dell has introduced a new screen size--a spacious yet portable 14-inch wide screen. The 1420's baseline price is a reasonable $819 and offers a host of upgrade options--everything from Blu-ray drives to Intel's latest Centrino Duo processors--that make the Inspiron line one of the most flexible systems out there. Our review unit packed in a discrete graphics chip, a Centrino Duo CPU, and mobile broadband from Sprint, driving the price up to nearly $1,700. While the 2006 debut of Apple's MacBook line was flat-out revolutionary--introducing Intel's Core 2 Duo CPUs and a 13.3-inch wide-screen display along with Apple's iSight camera, Front Row remote, and MagSafe power adapter--the May 2007 upgrade is more evolutionary. The overall design remains unchanged, as Apple bumped up the top processor speed to 2.16GHz and the default memory to 1GB for all three configurations while also adding larger hard drives. The move to Tecra was to provide a more robust and somewhat lighter computer for business travel -- and after 1 month and several trips, that's working out well. Finish and quality are impressive. Toshiba Support was great when I needed help with add-on memory. They were quick and solved the problem (when upgrading two chips, one has to go under the keyboard). Standby, SD-slot alignment, and touchpad all work just fine (another M9 reviewer reported problems). Judging from the first two business trips, the M9 is tougher, smaller, lighter, and a better performer than my previous Satellite 14.1". Sexy Beast: Taking the Wraps Off of LG's Stunning S1 Even though the price of basic computing continues to fall, and a nice notebook can be purchased for historically low prices this year, there is still an active and competitive high end. Notebooks like the Acer TravelMate 8204, Ferrari 4000 and 5000 series, MacBook Pro, ThinkPad T60 are some fine examples from companies looking to add some sex appeal to their lineups. I think the LG is an example of the latter. LG's notebooks, available in North America for about a couple of years now, are generally sharp looking machines with competitive specifications. Until recently they have not had a flagship model though. Enter the S1. LG's S1 Supermodel gets a brain transplant Back in August we were lucky enough to have an S1 (S1-M001A9 to be exact) notebook sent to us by LG. I was instantly enamoured by its striking good looks and solid feeling build quality. Excellent performance did not hurt its appeal factor either. Today we look at the updated S1. Because of an almost identical spec save for the updated Core 2 Duo CPU, we get a nice look at what Intel's latest brings to the table in terms of increased performance and improved power usage. Specifically, the model number of our review unit is the S1-M002A9. Beacuse of the similarities I am going to borrow heavily from my previous S1 review updated where appropriate. The Toshiba A135 series notebook is offered in a wide variety of configurations, and ranges in price, at common big-box and online resellers, from under $700 to nearly $1500. The particular model under review here, an A135-S4427 provided by Toshiba, falls near the lower end of this range, and at first glance appears to be an excellent choice for the value-minded consumer looking to obtain a nicely outfitted notebook. The S4427 comes with Vista Home Premium, an Intel Core Duo T2250 processor, one gigabyte of RAM, 120 gigabytes of hard drive space, and a DVD-SuperMulti drive, all for well under $1000. Although a stripped-down Celeron configuration will generally cost the least of any A135 model notebook, the S4427, for not a whole lot more money, and provides just about everything one might hope for in a non-gaming, consumer-oriented notebook.
