(06/17/07) The first career retrospective of the great Archie comics artist.Dan DeCarlo was one of the greatest artists working in humor comics in the latter half of the 20th century. He was without a doubt the most prolific, and for that reason was often referred to as "The Jack Kirby of humor comics." But he might have been likewise compared to pinup artist Gill Elvgren for his ability to render the female form in a way that was at once funny, charming, and unbelievably sexy. DeCarlo worked mostly on wholesome all-American features like Archie's Girls Betty and Veronica and My Friend Irma, but he populated these innocent stories with his irresistibly attractive women. This unique blend of hilarious homespun humor and libido-sparking art made DeCarlo's work outshine the competition. For nearly six decades, DeCarlo entertained the world with his special talents. Though best known as the definitive Archie Comics artist and creator of Josie and the Pussycats, DeCarlo also brought his unique style...See less

(06/17/07) An uproarious new novel in the tradition of Robert Asprin and Terry Pratchett! For someone who’s immortal, Never Dead Ned manages to die with alarming frequency--he just has the annoying habit of rising from the grave. But this soldier might be better dead than face his latest assignment. Ogre Company is the legion’s dumping ground--a motley, undisciplined group of monsters whose leaders tend to die under somewhat questionable circumstances. That’s where Ned’s rather unique talents come in. As Ogre Company’s newly appointed commander, Ned finds himself in charge of such fine examples of military prowess as a moonstruck Amazon, a very big (and very polite) two-headed ogre, a seductively scaly siren, a blind oracle who can hear (and smell) the future, a suicidal goblin daredevil pilot, a walking tree with a chip on its shoulder, and a suspiciously goblinesque orc. Ned has only six months to whip the Ogre Company into shape or face an even more hideous assignment, but that’s not the worst...See less

(06/17/07) The Museum of Lost Wonder is a book with a mission, simply stated: To illuminate life's mysteries. The execution is nearly indescribable. Think McSweeney's production values and design pyrotechnics. Think traditional esoteric symbols in a childhood garden of wonder. Think graphic novel and an adult version of the coolest activity book ever made. And you'll be somewhere in the neighborhood. Jeff Hoke has created a history of the human imagination with visual cues and clues and wonderment about and around everything you ever thought and everything you wish you'd been crafty enough to think. He has built a museum accessible to all, in book format, arranged with 7 halls (representing the seven stages of alchemical process) in which the questions of the universe unfold. All one needs to enter is some basic understanding of the human experience. Open The Museum of Lost Wonder, and step into an alternative world full of beautiful drawings, interesting historical tidbits, thoughtful...See less

(06/17/07) Ben Templesmith (30 Days of Night, Singularity 7, Fell) creates an all-eerie and humorous new series. Things are awakening in the city. Things that have a nasty habit of leaving mutilated bodies in their wake and it all reeks of demons and dark gods up to no good. Owing a favor to his lazy ghost cop buddy Trotsky, Wormwood, the gentleman corpse and his oddball entourage are brought in to investigate the case (or at least hopefully not stuff it up too much.)See less

(06/17/07) With Revenge of the Monster Hits, everyone's favorite Lady in Black, Elvira, has returned with more scary songs (including a few in which her voice is the most frightful element). Charles Sheffield's "It's Your Voodoo Working" is vintage rock, the Tubes' "Attack of the Fifty Foot Woman" is synth'd to the max but still a classic tune, and Warren Zevon's "Werewolves of London" isn't exactly creepy but it is still fun to listen to. And Elvira herself chimes in on a pair of originals, "Haunted House" and "Zombie Stomp." If you're looking for something to scare the trick-or-treaters, you might look elsewhere, but if you're carving pumpkins and want to have some fun for 30 minutes, this disc is for you. --Jason VerlindeSee less

(06/17/07) If you made a list of people who could create the perfect Halloween soundtrack album, chances are pretty good that the Mistress of the Dark would rank mighty high on it. This collection--which not only bears her name but also closes on her performance of "Full Moon"--brings together a passel of Elvira-sanctioned holiday favorites, tinged with spooky subtext and powerful as a sugar high. Early rock classics like "Haunted House" by Jumpin' Gene Simmons (not the Kiss fella but a bluesman who's even older) and Screamin' Jay Hawkins's "I Put a Spell on You" comprise the bulk of the set, but folks like Alice Cooper (whose "Welcome to My Nightmare" is included) also pop up like skeletons from the closet. --David SpragueSee less
