Fringe necklaces first made their presence known in the later part of the 19th century. Lighter and more airy than many of their necklace precursors from the 1860 - 1880s, this style uses a simple chain from which is hung a fringe of metal and gems. Here we have wispy blue aquamarines paired with radiant citrines, which dangle from the chain. Originating from archeological styles of ancient jewelry, here the forms were interpreted less literally, and with a more expressive and simplified flavor. Linear drops in graduated sizes line the sides and bottom of the chain. Each contains an oval-cut and faceted gemon top the aquamarine, the citrine on the bottom. Each is mounted in a crown setting of 14k gold and placed on knife-edge gold (so called for its knife like line of metal). Knife-edge gold does not appear until the 19th century and has a current, modern feel.
