(06/14/07) Design Story Introduced in 1946 the Nelson platform bench was part of George Nelson's first collection for Herman Miller and still stands as a benchmark of modern design. Like much of Nelson's work, the platform bench has clean, rectilinear lines, reflecting his architectural background and his insistence on what he calls "honest" design--that is, making an honest visual statement about an object's purpose. As presented in the 1948 Herman Miller furniture catalog, the platform bench "is primarily a high base for deep and shallow cases, but it also serves as a low table for extra seating." The 1955 catalog states that the bench "has proved to be one of the most flexible and useful units in the collection." The bench was reintroduced in 1994.See less

(06/14/07) Design Story The inspiration for Carol Catalano's innovative design came from a very down-to-earth source. "Most of my work is fairly technical in nature, so I thought it would be fun to take on a project just for fun." Catalano says. "In pondering how to improve on the simple function of a stool I found myself observing the simple act of intertwining the fingers of my hands." From there, Catalano developed several ideas for the stool by studying the ergonomics of comfortable sitting. Using cardboard and foam models, she and her staff at Catalano Design took the Capelli stool from concept to museum-quality prototype in less than two months. "From the beginning," Catalano says, "the form of the stool was a simple curve that we kept refining until it was comfortable and beautiful."See less

Noguchi believed the sculptor's task was to shape space, to give it order and meaning, and that art should "disappear," or be as one with its surroundings. Unwilling and unable to be pigeonholed, Noguchi created sculptures that could be as abstract as Henri Moore's or as realistic as Leonardo's. He used any medium he could get his hands on: stone, metal, wood, clay, bone, paper, or a mixture of any or all--carving, casting, cutting, pounding, chiseling, or dynamiting away as each form took shape. "To limit yourself to a particular style may make you an expert of that particular viewpoint or school, but I do not wish to belong to any school," he said.
