Summer Volunteering

16 ›
BAY AREA VOLUNTEER...
So there is a requirement for community service to graduate each year at my school. You need 20 hours, but, yes i know this is almost an impossible feat, i want to try for the presidential award (initial 100 hours), but cant find enough places to volunteer that would give me more than just 2 hours.

I already have almost 20 hours set up for like the first week of summer and i heard they give a bunch of opportunities during the school year, but if i want to get this, i need suggestions!

Do any of you know any websites that can help me find volunteer opportunities? (other that volunteermatch.org)

Thanks a bunch!

  • Sounds like you ought to just cold call a bunch of places in your area. Ask if they have any volunteer opportunities available. Report Spam Posted by triplyksis at 5:59 PM on 05/26/09

  • You could always hit up the Old Folks' Home. They're always looking for volunteers to spend time with the elderly. Other than that, I think the other posters have given you some great ideas. Good luck! Report Spam Posted by gregsgal at 7:35 AM on 05/27/09

  • I used to work as a candy striper, which was really rewarding :) Report Spam Posted by jinnyjinn at 9:47 AM on 05/27/09

  • the library. sounds boring but not a lot of people want to work there, so im sure they could use the help. the zoo (if you live by one) is also great Report Spam Posted by crayola09 at 11:30 AM on 05/27/09

  • for the ASPCA and nursing homes and they sometimes have Pet visitation to patients. Report Spam Posted by meveland990 at 12:29 PM on 05/27/09

  • If you live in Florida, you could volunteer your time at Locks of Love. In other states... you can volunteer with the Activities Department at a nursing home. A lot of people focus on helping kids and homeless, but forget the elderly. You mostly play games with them, serve them drinks and snacks, listen to them, comfort them. You can paint the little old ladies toenails, or listen to some of the mens war-stories.... Also, outside of Nursing homes, I don't know what age you have to be, but sometimes there are organizations that look for people to check on the elderly and disabled who are living still in their own homes or apartments. Sometimes you help them with trips to the grocery store, doctor visits, feeding their pets and mowing their lawns. Report Spam Posted by lady_arndt at 2:08 PM on 05/27/09

  • I do love the picture and the idea of service....and you are really taking it to the max...all the ideas you have been given are good ones. I would just add that if there is something you are especially interested in you could probably find some kind of service time related to that....for instance, we have a really good zoo in my state and they are always looking for people to spend volunteer time working with the animals or taking groups for tours. We have a huge foodbank here too and they could use all the hours anybody would give them....just sorting the food and putting it on the shelves takes a lot of time. Congrats are your community spirit!! Report Spam Posted by paws72 at 8:39 AM on 05/29/09

  • there are lots of places like nursing homes or retirement communities, local camps, churches, hospitals, animal shelters, food banks, homeless shelters and libraries. things like habitat for humanities, salvation army, and red cross. hope you find a place! volunterring is so fun! i ♥ volunterring! :) Report Spam Posted by happie2smile at 1:33 PM on 05/29/09

  • You area is bound to have many dog rescues, so if you like dogs that may be a good way to do it. Dog rescues are usually built on their volunteers, and may be specific to breed. I volunteer for a German Shepherd rescue and I LOVE it! Just google your area+dog rescue and you should find a lot. -^_^- Report Spam Posted by bellitude at 6:34 PM on 06/01/09
