Flower Meanings

Teleflora's True Romance... Happy Hydrangea My Fair Lady by Teleflora Teleflora's Pink Notion...

When words are unable to convey thoughtfulness & love to that special someone, flowers easily pass the message & express feelings on the sender's behalf.  Valentine's Day is the busiest day of the year for florists, & Mother's Day is right behind it.  Just for fun, I thought I'd share the meaning of certain flower types, according to Flower-Society.com.  Maybe some will inspire you.

Azalea - temperance.
Begonia - beware.
Bluebell - humility.
Carnation - fascination.
Daffodil - respect.
Daisy - loyalty.
Freesia - trust.
Gardenia - secret love.
Hydrangea - frigidity.
Lily - sweetness.
Magnolia - nobility.
Narcissus - egotism.
Orchid - refinement.
Peony - shame.
Petunia - resentment.
Rose - love.
Sunflower - pride.
Sweetpea - gratitude.
Tulip - beauty.
Violet - modesty.
Wisteria - welcome.
Zinnia - affection.

Roses are the most popular flowers in the world.  If you're planning on giving a gorgeous, fragrant bouquet of these to a lucky recipient, but can't decide on which hue is best, Telaflora.com has put together this helpful list of color meanings.

Red - romantic love, passion.
White - purity, loyalty.
Yellow - friendship, affection.
Pink - elegance, appreciation.
Orange - desire, admiration.
Purple - enchantment, love at first sight.

What are your favorite flowers & colors?

  • Poor Hydrangea (and when they're blue they're so pretty). Fun and interesting meanings. Hey, no Camellias, Lilacs would be nice too. I was just thinking about roses, hate the aphid care but it'd be nice to grow some roses.Love red roses and double delights and lots of roses, love violas in different purple combos, love Iris and I like the smaller Japanese and Dutch versions as opposed to the big bearded ones, red Azaleas and Camellias, all sunflowers, oh, wild roses too, very special, gardenias are nice and get rid of odors well... okay, I like lots and lots of flowers. • This is great! I love things like this. I even have a little children's book of flower meanings... Hmm, my two favorite flowers mean "Pride" and "Humility" - Almost complete opposites. Interesting. Report Spam Posted by sorapandora at 6:22 PM on 02/12/12

  • @sorapandora, maybe you're just balanced that way, or mood swings. Report Spam Posted by markblemish at 7:09 PM on 02/12/12

  • My favorites are pink Carnations, white Magnolias, and Gardenias!!!! Actually, I like nearly all flowers!!! I don't care too much for Roses, though!!!! And, of course my Mom's favorites are Roses, especially red ones!!!! Report Spam Posted by susan_brown at 7:50 PM on 02/12/12

  • Interesting post! I hate to think that Peonies translate to Shame, those are the flowers I want in my wedding one day! lol I love them! Report Spam Posted by sweeetkristen at 8:13 AM on 02/13/12

  • Hydrangeas and peonies are my favourite flowers - they seem to have quite negative meanings! I love wildflowers too though. I think in the Victorian era suitors used to send bouquets to their lovers - certain flowers would have certain meanings. Report Spam Posted by x0xsharicex0x at 12:25 PM on 02/13/12

  • Thanks! I'd just be happy to get any flowers at all :) Report Spam Posted by sweans at 3:55 PM on 02/13/12

  • Lilies and roses have always been my favorite flowers, especially ones in unique colors. The normal ones are lovely but there's something so interesting about the colors of a tiger lily, or a peachy-hued rose edged in red or pink. Nature creates the most amazing hues.
