How I met my G1: a love story

May 20, 2009 in Gadgets and Gizmos
My T-Mobile ยป Handset...
I know that there are many, many, many iPhone and Blackberry fans out there that would never consider parting with their phone. I used to be one of them. Then one day my sister @pjsteph and I were in a T-mobile store so she could upgrade her phone.

She fell in love with the G1 on my brother's recommendation.
As she fell in love, so did I.

Being jobless I knew it would be a long time before I could dream of upgrading from my Blackberry Pearl. However, my sister could see the love in my eyes and she was kind enough to purchase the phone for me. (Not to brag or anything, but my fam is pretty stellar!)

My G1 and I are madly in love.

Above all the obvious functions that a phone like this has, I love the applications the most.

I'm not sure how many Kaboodlers out there may be thinking of getting a G1 or may already own one, but this is sort of for you. I want to discuss apps.

Here are some of my faves from the Android market:

Calorie Counter - The name is pretty self explanatory. It makes use of the barcode scanning technology to scan in food items, but you can just search as well. There are also trackers for exercise as well as weight.

Coloroid and Friction Mobile - My two favorite games to play. Very simplistic.

Facebook Sync - Syncs your phonebook with your facebook friends' photos.

Last.fm - I love being able to access my music without having to put any actual music on my phone.

Locale - You can set up instances when you would need a silent phone and it automatically detects and activates.

Shazam - Find out the title and artist of a mystery song in no time at all.

ShopSavvy - Scan a barcode and find the best local and web prices.

Toddler Lock - This app is sort of fun if you have an infant or toddler to be entertained. It locks your screen and allows your child to be entertained by shapes, colors and sounds without accidentally calling anybody. My 5-month-old niece loves it.

Twidroid - This is the only Twitter app I have even tried, but I quite enjoy it.

Where - This app sort of eliminated a few other apps for me. It has weather, news, yelp, movies, gas prices, traffic and even a starbucks locater. Love it.

Those are a few of my faves.
G1/Android users - What are yours?

ooh pretty

Thanks for the great review and I love that you can scan things! I'm currently researching phones, so this helps.

i've been debating about getting this phone..it looks really awesome and the apps you described are awesome

This does seem pretty nifty. I don't have T-Mobile... so I will stick with my Blackberry haha

Oh wow...i want a cooler phone than i have now. [LG Krazr] I'm sick of the ol' flip phone [sooo last year lol] I have Verizon so i wouldn't be able to have this but there are equivalents, don't those applications all cost money though? That's a hefty bill...I love the apps though

Haha I don't have money to spend on apps, all of those apps I mentioned are FREE!!! :)

So you found your true love huh? I need to find mine. My true love left me with an iphone and that was about all he left me with lol. I'm love it and I don't. I miss having some keys to click. This phone is beautiful. It's great when we find things that suit us so well. And YES your fam is most def stellar! ; ) Thanks for the review I am keeping this in mind.

WOW!!!

That locale feature sounds absolutely amazing. Why don't other phones have that? It would seem like such a no brainer. Thanks for posting this, by the way. And, I love that your family is so awesome. :)

I considered switching services just so I could get this phone but, in the end, my phone company's claws are firmly entrenched. I'm really glad to hear how awesome it is, though. Google sure does "suffer" the recession in style.

Missed you!

That does sound like an awesome phone! And your family sounds pretty stellar too! : )

Amazing !!!
A Really Great Deal!!

Such a cute phone. I need a new phone. My BlackBerry decided to stop sending me text messages (SMS texts) :(.

i like that phone.. i recenlty got a motorola (mispelled i think lol) from my dad and its alright .. im saving for an iphone though

That is BRAND NEW INFORMATION!

I like this phone. Thanks for the information.

thats awesome! i havent heard of that phone until now. sounds cool :)

Wow, that looks really cool! Me wanty! I'm amazed at all the apps it has.

Just fyi, a nicer twitter app for Android has been released a little while ago called Twidgit Lite.

It's actually a widget for your G1's desktop and functions much nicer than twitroid (of which i had constant problems)
