I'm in love.

Jan 30, 2009 in Home and Garden
I haven’t been able to get this photo out of my mind ever since Cristina shared it with me two days ago. I absolutely must find a place to paint these stripes in my new apartment.

Kathleen and Jeremy, the brilliant couple behind this masterpiece, are my new favorite people.

What do you think – should I go for it?

Sure and you could wear prison stripes to match.

I say yes... go for it! That's pretty darn incredible.

LOL @magnus.

Yes indeed. I'm so doing it if I move to where I can paint!

Wow, way too much like work. :) Def, different though. I'd be afraid I'd get lost, like in one of those hall of mirrors they have a carnivals. :)

Looks like a lot of work, but looks very chic and modern! I think the continuous horizontal stripes would also make the rooms look larger

LOVE. IT. Reminds me of my wedding stripeys. I'd do it in a teensy room - like a powder room - to give a smaller space some huge impact.

I like it, but I think it might be a little overwhelming in a main hallway or room. I agree with katystardust: it would be awesome in a smaller or lesser used room :) Super striking!

Isn't that how Sephora is painted?

thiiiis is epic, but i'm sort of disappointed by the wooden doors. a little primer and white paint would fix that, though.

also, i'm pumped that kabroskie knows what sephora looks like inside

While I agree I'd probably prefer it without the wooden trim aesthetically, I couldn't bring myself to ever paint original woodwork in an old house.

I think this really works because of the twists and turns and because it''s playing off the dark wooden old fashioned doors and floors. Where in your new home can you transpose this mix of modern and old fashioned?
@Kabroskie-- like you don't know.

While I think it is pretty, and definitely eye catching, I would paint the stripes in colors that aren't so stark and contrasting. Two shades of yellow - one light one dark? I don't know. Maybe I'm having issues because it's not really my style...

old wood can suck it i'd paint anything i'm a rebel

I love you, Misee.

+1 for Misee, you're my hero.

ps. +2 for Misee, punctuation sucks.

Well its not what I would choose. I am not an interior designer, but wood floors with black and white strips is just a tad overwhelming.

That is so amazing. Seriously. Its so funny because I was just putting together a few new pages in my inspiration book (just stuff I print out and paste in a blank sketchbook) and the main decorating theme I've noticed myself drawn to is painted stripes. This picture far exceeds anything I've come across though. Its very whimsical, classic, and modern. A hard combo, but it totally works. I know I've said this before, but I love your style!

I looove things like this.

And I kinda like the mismatching woodwork with the paint. White would look killer, but I'm drawn to the contrast. All it needs is a nice big painting to bring the two together.

Ugh, and a new light fixture. Yeah. ;)

I like it a lot, but instead of a hallway in there, I think the stripes would be nicer in a wider room area, because if you have them too closely packed together, it might become too much of an optical illusion and your guests or you might have trouble seeing corners, pathways, or can experience a minor disorientation. Stripes can have that affect on a person's visual perception.

I also noticed that the darkest stripe is a kind of nice navy blue, and if you decided not to do the stripes in the end, I think a nice field of that blue goes very nicely with the wood flooring and doors.

i love you cristina please be my wife ok
and kabroskie, i'm always here to inspire you to be a badass rebel and get totally pumped to ruin anything that's lower on the food chain than you are (wood is applicable here)

Misee, this will be you and me...

I've done something similar to this but with glossy black & matte black. I did that in a Dining room with a huge cafe inspired painting. It was awesome. When I told people they thought I was crazy, but when they saw it they loved it. I've also done a sort-of argyle pattern too. I love to do patterns in small unexpected places.

Nice, weslee. I love the gloss/matte tone-on-tone look.

thanks! can I be a bridesmaid for yours and misee's wedding? lol

cristina, awww so romantic!

weslee, i'll have to check with the missus, but i would love for you to take part in our nuptials!

Oooh, I wanna be the "Bro of Honor".

misee & cristina - I will officiate.

A few things you should know!
1. The light was immediately replaced with the IKEA KNAPPA pendant
2. I get giddy when I'm wearing a "prison striped" shirt to match.
3. I have an internal debate every day on whether or not to paint the doors white or leave 'em alone. I think the contrast with wood is unexpected and perfectly unpolished.

Thanks for all the feedback! Stripes are only for the daring so proceed with caution. Some mornings I wake up and feel like I'm in Beetlejuice. Ha!
