DVD Repairer... Does It Work!?

HELP! I am in desperate need of a DVD Repairer STAT! The husband and I have no cable or satellite t.v., rather we have tons of DVDs, and some CDs that we can no longer enjoy because of scratches. [[grumble]]

It is completely out of the question to replace them all with new ones. We'd never be able to replace them all - we have a huge collection! So, we're looking for something to repair them with.

My question is this: Have any of you ever bought one of these things and does it really work?

I'd love to hear your honest opinions and reviews. Thanks a ton!

ok. Here's the deal: It's really not worth it to buy one. They can help remove minor scratches in the plastic layer. But you could do the same yourself with one of those little bottles of disc cleaner and foam pads (they are really really cheap). I had also had friends swear by rubbing alcohol, and a lighter will work, but you must be VERY careful. Essentially, you are trying to smooth out that plastic layer so that the laser can smoothly read the layer of data underneath. That said, if the scratches are so deep that the layer UNDER the plastic is scratched, There isn't anything that will fix it. Hope that helps! :)

If you buy the scratch repair liquid (a form of wax) and buff it by hand you'll probably get better results. You let it dry on the scratched surface and then use a cloth to buff it. It's not really a permanent fix - you may have to do it again in a few months - but I've gotten pretty good results with it. It basically fills in the scratches with the wax, I guess. Not perfect but definitely inexpensive and helpful!

Home DVD repairers are really for cleaning the mildest of scratches and fingerprints. My advice to you would be to call your local video store to see if they have a DVD/CD resurfacing machine and simply have them resurfaced. It may cost anywhere from $1 - $3 per disc, which is a lot cheaper than replacing them. If you have a lot of DVD's they might give you a discount. When properly resurfaced, DVD's and CD's look and perform like new!

Q: Can your DVD be repaired?

A: Hold the disc to the light with the label side facing you. If you can see the scratch from this side, the disc cannot be repaired.

Hope this helps :)

Good luck!

They work on little scratches and on finger prints. Major scratches and gauges... They don't do a thing for. Sometimes you can take it to like Game Stop or something and they can try to fix it. It costs like $5 ish.

They only work with small scratches..and that the thing that suck about it when it come's to deeper scratches or big ones..not that good ,My aunt had one exactly like on the photo u have and it didn't work as well as she though It would.I think Best buy had some other device for DVD repair not sure how much though sorry. But I hope U find one and post about .

Good Luck.

Thank you! This is a great help to me too!!! : }

never used one. If my dvd has a scratch, i wipe it w/ Alcohol. I wouldnt waste my money on 100 dollar dvd repairs

I have seen a product where they can actually repair damaged or scratched cd's /dvd's

Talked to a guy at Best Buy and he suggested toothpaste! So... I'll try that and see what happens and update again.

I had been thinking about getting this, but will save my money to follow your tips above. Thanks, guys :)
