Should I or Shouldn't I???

At first I was so excited about my idea for Halloween this year, but now I'm not so sure of myself. I have been studying French for over 8 years now (scary how time flies). Being a French Stereotype seemed like the perfect fit for me. This is especially true since I don't want to spend a lot of money since I probably won't even go to a party. For the most part I would be wearing it over to a friends house one night and to "Safe Trick or Treat", which is an event my college hosts for children in the community to play games and get candy in a safe environment.
What I'm not sure about is whether the 4 French students at the university would be insulted by my costume. It is especially difficult to know given that the French sense of humor is different than the American sense of humor. If I back out now though, I don't have any other costume ideas that I like this well.
For now the plan is to go with this idea and to make it as over the top as possible. This way I stand a better chance as it coming off as a jest and not me being ethnocentric. I have a black and white striped long sleeve shirt that I bought from AE and a black beret that I ordered online somewhere. To finish the clothes I think I will wear my skinny jeans and some black peep toe wedges. I haven't completely decided on the other accessories, so if you have any thoughts please share. My ideas include a red scarf tied around my neck, a baguette, fleur de lis earings, and a poodle stuffed animal (if I can find one).
Well...any thoughts???

That's a tough one. I would think the french students may be used to that kind of stereotype and would get that its a joke. And you're not saying anything bad about french people with the outfit, just exemplifying the idea of the style of dress that's been associated with Paris for so long. So, to me, it doesn't seem offensive. Then again, you never know what will or will not offend someone. You could ask the students how they feel about it if you're too worried, but its halloween, its supposed to be about fun, and no one dresses up with the state of mind to hurt anyone's feelings, and everyone should understand that. I think its a cute and unique idea. I think a baguette would be a fun and tasty accessory, and an accurate one, since from what I remember from my 5 years of french classes, bread is truly a large part of the french lifestyle. Though if you really want to amp up the exaggeration, then the poodle would be hilarious. I do wonder where the idea of all french people in berets and striped hats came from anyway... I think it will all work out just fine, though. Bon chance!
