Do people really wear turtle necks still?

Together® Appliqué-inset...
I'm unsure what the problem is, but for some reason I can't bring myself to wear a turtle neck. I live in New Hampshire, where it's freakin' cold for 16 months a year... I see people wearing turtle necks (for good reason) quite often, but each time I see one I think "ew".

I think perhaps it's my lack of long neck that makes me squeamish, but honestly, I've never seen an attractive turtle neck. I'm not suggesting wearing a plunging v-neck neckline when it's 17 degrees below 0, but can't people wear scarves? Or perhaps a regular round neckline? Why stuff your head through a hole no bigger than a sleeve and think it looks good. And I don't care who you are, your hair is NOT going to survive the donning of a turtle neck under any circumstance.

The image above is from Newport News (not the best brand ever, but I adore most of their products) and is, IMO, re-pul-sive. Seriously...Bad enough to look like you're wearing a cast on your neck, and to have to walk around all day feeling like you're being strangled by a really, really weak midget, but to then add insult by adding that disgusting granny appliqué insert? UGH. Seems to me that in these modern times people would figure out that they don't need to dress like a ass to keep warm.

K.. my little vent is over. I could be wrong with my turtle neck opinion, and if you like wearing them... um... well ew, but I understand I guess.

  • Great topic! While I don't like the one your showed above either, I think turtle necks can be super cute. My problem is dealing with my claustrophobia issues--I can't wear a turtle neck top that also has long sleeves. It's one or the other. Also, the turtle neck can't be too thick (i.e. too much fabric), otherwise it feels more like a neck brace than a top ;). Report Spam Posted by mamor at 11:08 AM on 10/30/08

  • aww I guess I'm super lame but I think black turtlenecks can be super clean and chic! Plus they help mask my ghastly pale neck and chest which always seem to be about 5 shades whiter than my face and arms in the winter, ick! I agree with you though the turtleneck pictured looks awful... like one of those super thick, tight necks that you have to yank for 5 minutes to just get it over your head.. definitely not a fan Report Spam Posted by camale at 11:43 AM on 10/30/08

  • Too funny...I posted something recently on one of my lists about turtlenecks. I can't wear them either. Makes me feel like I'm being strangled. Ugh! And the top in the pic would be really sweet, WITHOUT the turtleneck. thanks for blogging this. :) Report Spam Posted by lamerchick at 11:50 AM on 10/30/08

  • We're still getting 85 degree days over here in SoCal and I was shocked to see a girl wearing one the other day!!! Report Spam Posted by cakes at 11:59 AM on 10/30/08

  • I wear a lot of looser, more deconstructed-looking turtlenecks. I love them. But I'm with everyone else on this particular one being fug. Report Spam Posted by alicatstrut at 2:01 PM on 10/30/08

  • I actually like them! Well, in moderation. I usually like the deconstructed look that alicatstrut mentioned. I guess it just depends on how you wear them. However this year I'm leaning toward scarves (more than ever, which was always a lot) and snoods! Also the Unisex Scarf American Apparel has right now (for $28) is definitely on my list of things to buy. I think it can give the warmth of the turtleneck without looking frumpy and stuck in the past. http://i.americanapparel.net/storefront/images/altimages/rsa2502_alt.gif Report Spam Posted by lindsayryan at 6:14 PM on 10/30/08

  • I am 100% with you. Turtlenecks are simply awful Report Spam Posted by ericspade at 5:15 AM on 10/31/08

  • Black turtlenecks can look very, very good on some people. But mock turtlenecks look just as good and don't strangle you. I can't wear them, myself, but I had a male friend a few years ago that had salt and pepper hair who damned gorgeous in one. Report Spam Posted by museumgirl at 2:09 PM on 10/31/08
