Beauty's Only Skin Deep

How many of you out there are seduced by packaging? Be honest. I know I am.

It's so hard not to be drawn in by beauty products. Not only do they claim to erase wrinkles, firm skin, reduce imperfections and basically turn us all into godesses, but they are packaged in such an alluring way it's hard to resist at times.

Now don't get me wrong, I love things to look nice. I'm all for the aesthetics of things, but not when function is compromised. Or when packaging is so ridiculously excessive ... but don't get me started on waste!

Take the lip balm here. Badger Balms are packaged in such a whimsical way. The cute little badger holding a tangerine is what first drew me to this product, which is essentially a fruit-flavoured lip balm. If this had been in a plain plastic tube would I have been as interested?

Lush products are either completely free of packaging (yay!) or in simple, fuss-free plastic pots and tubs. There's no chance of being sucked in by ribbons, embossed cardboard packaging and the like here. It's the quality of the product inside that counts with Lush.

The appearance of this toner from Boots' Original Beauty Formula range was the deciding factor for me. I've used the same toner since I was a teenager but the elegant glass bottle and the old-fashioned label that is straight out of the archives at Boots is what drew me to this product. Yeah, it's a good toner, but what I like more is the fact that it looks great in my bathroom. It has that nostalgic feel to it, as if it has been around for many years, just without all the dust.

So spill. Does beauty product packaging make a difference to you?

Sharice, I'm with you on this. I'm a sucker for packaging. In fact, each of the items you listed here are ones that have drawn me in because of their visual appeal. I know Lush is known for having little to no frills, but that's part of the allure for me. I've not tried the Badger lip balm, but I've got a few of those products on my lists. As for the Boots apothecary line, I'm in love. Just got the bubble bath and not only is it divinely fragranced, but the bottle looks perfect next to my Jonathan Adler "purity" soapdish.

This is a great blog and I can't wait to read what other kaboodlers have to say.

I'm definitely a sucker for well-designed packaging. I'd have to say Fresh is my current fave...

Fabulous post!!! I'm not easily swayed by pretty packaging, but there is one exception: Guerlain's Eye Kohl.

@jinnyjinn Gorgeous!!

id have to agree that the packaging will definitely take part in my decision to purchase certain products. ive probably passed up way better products than what im using just because of packaging. i havent used any boots products..but omg, that bottle IS too pretty. and the lush products may not use packaging but i think the look of the containers is unique and passing them i would have to stop and check them out.

great post!

After trying a few Benefit things that looked cute, I've stopped being suckered in by packaging.

Yes packaging sells, I was actually thinking about going into that feild (designing packaging for cosmetics). I'm always really drawn to a pretty package but if I can tell it sucks, I won't just buy it anyway.

yes...the packaging is what draws me in. But thats what sucks everyone into everything. Like food and cleaning products and yeah...Great post btw
