The search for sun in a can
Apr 17, 2009
Spring is here! Or at least that's what I keep telling myself. Living in the pacific northwest there's no other season that I look forward to. But with 8 months of winter, it is a challenge to get that sun-kissed look in time for summer.
I'm a health minded person, and not opposed to going to a tanning salon-but have a history of getting the strangest tan-lines and sunburns of all my friends.
So this spring I'm going to do something different. I'm going to embark on a journey, of self discovery and self tanning! Like anyone else seeking the bronzed look of being in the sun I'm afraid of turning orange. Very afraid.
So let me know if there is a product that I should try and if there's any advise on getting the best looking tan I can pass it on. If I end up looking like an ooompalumpa then try not to laugh too hard!

I just bought Hawaiian Tropic Island Radiance Self Tanner -Medium/Dark last week. It is definitely my favorite self tanner I've used to date (and I've tried A LOT over the years). It is in a clear gel form and is super easy to rub in to the skin. I was able to get a completely streak free application from it and my very pale skin now looks like I spent a week at the beach. It's pretty awesome. My favorite thing about it is that it doesn't have the icky self tanner smell to it as bad as everything else I've tried, and also that it is only 10 bucks! It is also very moisturizing and left my skin silky smooth. The only downside is that it took a while to completely dry, which is a pain in the butt because you cant really get dressed until it is dry.
I haven't tried the Jergens self tanner, but it seems to get pretty good reviews on drugstore.com. I tried something similar that was a daily application one, but it had such a strong self tanner smell to it that I didn't want to wear it on a daily basis because It was so stinky! It was, however, a great way to control the level of color and it was also streak free, which is a HUGE plus. I think I read that this Jergens one doesn't have that bad of an odor so it is definitely worth a try. There are so many forms of self tanner out there (lotion, gel, spray, foam, etc) that you might just have to experiment and find what works best for you.
I have had great experience with Jergens. I've read a lot of info from "experts" who say the best way to avoid the orange look is to go 2-3 shades darker than your natural skin tone. I agree, because I've had bad experience with every self-tan product purchased in the deep color. The streaks show worse, too.
@hophead - I'll have to try the Hawaiian Tropic. Sounds great!
I LOVE Fake Bake Instant Airbrush Tanning Spray. It is a continuous spray that goes on Chocolate brown, so you don't have to wait for the color to develop too discover you missed a spot! When the tan develops and you shower off the guide color, you have a beautiful golden (not orange) tan and no streaks!!
