An acute addiction to premium denim

A few years back, I was never really into dressing up and being fashion forward. Even though I grew up with a Mom who is deeply involved in Singapore's fashion scene, I'm far from being a girly-girl (I never wore makeup until I went to college, and I thought Christian Louboutin was a brand of chocolates). Much to the horror of my fashionista mother, my idea of a presentable outfit was a pair of khakis and a baggy t-shirt that did nothing for my figure.
"That shirt does nothing for your boobs," my Mom would say, as she gave my outfit a disapproving glance. "And those khakis? Pooh! You might as well wear a potato sack."
Before I started dragging myself to the gym, I had a pear-shaped figure that didn't bode well with jeans, so I just avoided denim completely. Oh, I had a pair of Gap jeans for colder days while I was at college in California, but they did absolutely nothing for my thighs. Plus, after a few washes, the color started to fade, and the hems started to fray.
Finally, as fate would have it, I came across a pair of True Religion jeans on the discount rack at Off Saks Fifth. I still remember that moment - I was perusing the racks of designer clothes while my sister was trying on heaps of shoes, when I saw a pair of bootcut True Religions in acid-wash sticking out of a pile of Juicy Couture warm-ups like a sore thumb.
"True Religion? Somehow that name seems to ring a bell," I thought to myself. And then I realized that I had seen a photo of MTV's Audrina Patridge wearing a pair of True Religions in US Weekly ("Audrina rocks her True Religions while going on a java run to Starbucks!") Since the dressing room was empty (and my sister was still trying to decide between a pair of Tory Burch ballet flats and some LAMB gladiator sandals), I grabbed the pair of True Religions in a Size 27 and marched into a dressing room, ready to end my abstinence from jeans.
As I pulled on the True Religions, the first thing I noticed was how they made my legs look longer. I turned around and looked at my behind in the mirror, and was astonished to see that it didn't look like a sack.
"Can this be true? A pair of jeans that actually make my legs look nice?" I thought gleefully to myself.
After parading around the dressing room in the jeans, I knew I had to have them. Even if they were $105.27.
"Think of it as an investment," my sister said. "Because you won't have to buy another pair of jeans for a long, long time."
Ever since then, I've been hooked on premium denim. True Religion, Rock and Republic, J Brand...you name it, I love it! Sure, it's pretty tough on the wallet, but I hardly ever buy other clothes anymore. And my Mom is much happier with my dress sense now.
Here are some of my favorite online stores (I usually buy denim online because the nearest Neiman Marcus/Sak's Fifth is about an hour away):
1. revolveclothing.com - Free Priority Shipping and Returns, an excellent selection of designer brands (including J Brand, Sass and Bide, True Religion and Rock and Republic).
2. Shopbop.com - Free standard shipping, Good selection of premium denim and they have a denim video guide which denim lovers should definitely check out.
3. chickdowntown.com - Free shipping on orders $150+, good selection of denim and shoes.
My personal favorites include True Religion Stellas (skinny cut), True Religion Billys (straight cut), J Brand 12" (skinny cut) and Rock and Republic Kassandras (boot cut).
