How I organize the abyss that I call... my room.

Okay I admit it - my room is a mess. I like to refer to it as "creative mess", but no one really sees it that way (especially not my sister and mother, who are so neat that sometimes I wonder if I was adopted).
When my parents came to visit me last month, my mother expressed her horror at the piles of clothes, books, textbooks, papers, electronics, shoes and bags lying in little mounds all over my room. I tried to explain that I was in the process of tidying my room, and that the first step was to make mini piles of similar items before actually putting them away nicely, but my mom picked a stray sock off the ground and gave me a disapproving glare.
"Mini piles? Ha! Your room looks like a rat hole!" she said (such a pleasant lady).
I tried not to be affronted by the fact that my own mother had just compared my room to the lair of a hairy rodent, but then I realized that, oh my goodness, my room really does resemble a rat hole. Only human-sized.
So the weekend after my parents left, I trooped down to Ikea in Palo Alto in search of some form of organization system for my room. I considered Walmart and Target, but their websites didn't seem to show a wide selection of bedroom furniture. Besides, Ikea's dining cafeteria has amazingly delicious Swedish meatballs for only $3.99.
The Ikea staff were helpful, and they even gave me a measuring tape and shopping list to help me with my shopping trip. After looking at several bedroom set-ups (including a kid's bedroom set-up that featured a slide leading to the bed... how awesome is that?), I decided to get the Kullen wardrobe for $149.00 (picture on the top left). Going along with the Kullen series (I have no idea who or what Kullen is, but it sure is a good deal), I also decided to get the Kullen chest of drawers.
Just as I thought I was done with my epic shopping trip, I saw the Komplement set of six storage boxes for only $9.99 on display by the payment counter (picture on the bottom left). The set comes with six boxes in various sizes - perfect for putting in your makeup, accessories, stationery or any other miscellaneous small items.
So at this moment, as I lie in bed while typing this blog entry, I am content that my room is no longer comparable to a rat hole. In fact, I think this neatness business might just grow on me. Maybe I wasn't adopted after all...j/k :)
