My One Wedding Tip

13 ›
I got married in July. Planning my simple stress free wedding was a bit more hectic than planned. As my mother-in-law, Bonnie, pointed out when I first made this observation, it's the other people that bring the stress. As the wedding got closer life got crazier and I found myself worn out and tired.
The plan was always to have a very natural look with my hair. Half up, possibly curled with a wreath of flowers. We toyed with the idea of getting it done and Bonnie suggested someone, but she kept deciding not to call. The day before the wedding she decided we should go ahead with it and she set up an appointment super close to the scheduled time of the wedding.
The day of I was feeling a bit burnt out. And stuff kept happening. On the way to the Stylist I though I had lost the rings. While waiting for my turn in the chair I was called and told that my very allergic mother had stepped on a hornets nest near where they were setting up the food table. There was plenty of stuff to worry about. But when I sat down in that chair and the stylist had someone start putting my hair in hot rollers, I was finally able to relax. I had been reassured that everything was getting taken care of and then forced to sit down and let somebody else do all the work. The heat of hot rollers felt so good,  and I just sat and enjoyed the feeling of somebody combing and styling my long hair.
In the end the style she chose might not have suited my large forehead and funky hairline and wasn't exactly what I had wanted. But when I looked in the mirror I looked like a bride. Feeling and looking like a bride and being able to fully relax for the first time in a long time was wonderful. I later found out through someone else that that was very reason the appointment had been planned, and I'm so grateful that Bonnie realized that this was exactly what I needed.
No matter what your other plans may be, I highly recomend getting your hair professionally done. Or at least putting some time aside just for you with no distractions and little thinking. Things will happen and you will worry so find something that truly relaxes you. I thought the bachelorette party would be relaxing. It was just pizza, ice cream floats, and chick flicks with my sisters-in-law and best friend. But there is still to much too think about. The Hair appointment gave me "me time". Something we should all try to find in any hectic point in our lives.

  • I def agree, there are so many pressures when planning a wedding and a lot of them come from family members putting those pressures on you. I'm glad you found a way to relax on your special day:) Report Spam Posted by naominh at 8:39 AM on 01/27/10

  • I was running late the day of and told my stylist to do whatever but that we needed to hurry up. The make-up lady was doing my makeup so my eyes were closed pretty much the whole time. When they were done I rushed to the limo and went straight to the ceremony. On the way over, I looked in the mirror and hated what I saw but I had no time to change it.I wish I had left more time because I hate my hair & makeup in my pictures - which makes me not like my wedding pics. It's a shame, but oh well. In the end I told myself that I married my best friend and that's all that matters. It's so true that other people create the stress - I have so many horror stories about my wedding day! But we're still married and life is good. lol Report Spam Posted by weslee at 9:11 PM on 01/27/10

  • @weslee - oh no! I bet your wedding pics are gorgeous--it's just a shame that you didn't like your hair and makeup. I just did a run-through on Sat. with hair and makeup stylists for the wedding. I definitely rec. doing a run-through early in the day and keeping it all day (because the wedding is an all-day event). Report Spam Posted by jinnyjinn at 12:19 PM on 01/28/10

  • I agree 110% you alway need time for yourself to just relax so you can enjoy the rest of the day. This was what I did even for prom it was very stressful also. This is a great tip for anyone getting ready for any big eventful day!!! : } Report Spam Posted by kelsjax at 2:50 PM on 02/08/10

  • I am so glad you felt like a bride. I just try to remind brides-to-be, the wedding is a cool slice of your life....but ( and I am putting this on shirts..plug here, jk)...you are bride for a day, wife for a life. I love looking at wedding pictures, but no matter how well you plan.....you can't "control" others or the weather, etc. I don't like the pictures from my first wedding becauses the hair styles at that time were huge updos as in the days of Marie Antoinette. I have a teeny head and face and my hair felt like it was two stories high. I had to wobble to keep it balanced. I must post a picture...so you can get a kick. YOUR pic looks like your wedding was lovely!!! I recommend a simple hair style so it doesn't look out of whack ten (or twenty....or thirty plus) years later. Weslee....you look beautiful in your pictures! Report Spam Posted by paws72 at 1:02 PM on 08/10/10
