Where Should I Register?

Feb 11, 2009
My husband and I are having our first kid. My due date is July 21st, so I just passed by 4th month and in my 17th week. We're super excited and super scared. One of our many to dos is to register somewhere, or multiple places. We live in NYC, specifically in Manhattan, where we don't necessarily live close to any stores with baby/maternity sections.

Any suggestions on where to register? Since it won't be convenient for us to go to the store, we want to also make sure that they have a good registry. A few years ago when my sister-in-law was pregnant with her first child, she registered at Babies R Us. During her baby shower, she got so many multiples of gifts because the tracking on what gifts were purchased was pretty crappy. We want to avoid incidents like that. We also want to make sure it's easy to return or exchange items.

The stores that we know of that have baby registries are Target, Babies R Us, Amazon and Buy Buy Baby. Any recommendations or places we should steer clear of? ny recommendations on what to register for or what not to register for is appreciated too!

Congrats on your little one!! The most successful baby registry I've seen was on Amazon.com because people can buy things in person or order through the internet and you can get to pick from a million products. My little cousin/goddaughter, Shannon, got everything she ever wanted and more :)

So excited for you! Pottery Barn Kids has a lot of cute stuff and their registry is easy and reliable.

While I LOVE Target, and I actually worked there back in the day, I would discourage anyone from doing a registry there. If you don't get a gift receipt, you may be in for a hell of a time getting any money back if you need to return.

Congratulations! I would register at Amazon and Buy Buy Baby. You can order online from Buy Buy and go to the store and see what they have, which some people prefer to do, so it's nice to give them that option, especially if they are late shoppers going to your shower, or even if you are not going to have a shower, some people prefer to see it and examine it first. I think registering is the same no matter the event, ie) a wedding, you can do it in more than one place as long as people know.

Ohh Target's good!!
But so is the rest!!

Congrats Oda! That is such exciting news!

Oda, congrats! Target is great with their focus on style and savings! Amazon is always my favorite.

Congrats! Amazon is a great choice so is Target, don't over think it too much try to enjoy this time as much as possible! If your morning sickness isn't too bad still :) I must be crazy but I personally enjoyed both of my pregnancys I felt better than ever! Good Luck and best wishes! If you want any product advice just ask with the two boys in the last four years I've tried just about everything.

Congrats!! I am so excited for you and your husband. :) I would register at Amazon..they have just about everything.

Congrats, Oda!

congrats!!! honestly, you can't go wrong registering at any of these places. my wife registered at babies-r-us because we liked that they specialized in the needs of new parents - which we were -- and still are :) they also had tons of reviews on their site which helped. that said, if you know exactly the things you want, target usually has a better price on those items... usually.

if you what you want is an eclectic bunch of stuff that sometimes is baby related and sometimes isn't (like a new TV for daddy to keep himself occupied while feeding baby), then target and amazon are better choices.

First, I must say congrats! Secondly, I have had many opportunities to register at various places (married, 2 kids).
Of course Target seems like the logical choice since there have wonderful stuff and chances are there's one nearby just about everyone. However, if you talk to people who have actually registered there. They will tell you to beware! They are an absolute pain to deal with. Their return/exchange policy is pretty strict. They do not allow returns or exchanges without a receipt. They will only make an exception once per calendar year and allow you to return up to $70 worth of merchandise without a receipt. And it does not matter that it was on your registry or not. I have already reached my return limit but I still have multiple items from Target that I cannot take back. They also have a terrible delay when it comes to updating your registry. I had multiple family members by me the same exact gift at separate times, but Target had not updated my registry so the item still looked unpurchased. Needless to say, it was a huge fight to get them to exchange any of my stuff.
Toys 'r' Us and Babies 'r' Us is so much better. Plus they will give you a 10% off coupon good for everything else on your registry that you did not get. Remember to sign up for their free rewards card and use it every time because you get perks.

OMG! Too bad that what I am about to say is extremely trite right now. Regardless. I could not be more excited for you!! I would totally recommend Buy Buy Baby for all of your baby needs. They don't just point you to what aisle the item you are looking for is on. They actually know their stuff and advise you. They are also located in Chelsea, so it's a quick jump off of the 1 train, and a few blocks walk. I registered with them, and they were very helpful.
I never even thought about Target, because there are none close to where we live, and I have never found those remotely close to have good customer service. Babysrus, well, Baby...it's a jungle in there..enough said.

Congratulations! I personally don't have any kids of my own but I have a ton of godchildren, nieces & nephews so I'm a veteran at shopping for for them. Target and Pottery Barn for Kids are my favorite registries to shop from. I also love shopping at Janie & Jack because the outfits are so cute...even though no one ever registers there because everything is so expensive!!! Babystyle also has cool stuff but they've suspended their online shopping platform; however their line is carried by Cadeau Maternity store in NYC. Good luck!

Amazon!!

Congrats :) I'm vvvery excited for you! I'm a huge Amazon fan, so I'd go with them. They're very reliable! The shipping options are awesome as well.

Congratulations to you! I don't see kaboodle on the registry options ...

From your choices I'd definitely go Amazon ~ quick shipping and lots of choices! Good luck ~ and ENJOY this wonderful time

So excited for you guys! :-) I have to say that in my previous experience of buying stuff for little ones (I am an "Auntie" many times over!), I have to echo the Amazon and Target recommendations. Great variety of products and great prices. Looking foward to early March! ;-)

i say target because there is so much stuff there that has the same quality as toys r us for a lot less

Target is awesome for shopping for baby stuff, but their return policy without a receipt is so limiting that you can't register there unless you are prepared to get stuck with duplicates you can't return. I wish I could have registered there because I love Target and they have everything you need, usually cheaper than Babies R Us which is where I ended up registering. I did have a note in the shower invitation saying Target gift cards were appreciated for all the last-minute necessities. That way I was still able to shop at Target without getting burned by the return policy.

Hi, I wanted to congratulate you on the new arrival...My Daughter actually was born on the 20th of July 07. For my registry I ended up having two registry, at first I had Baby R Us since I had my family in Europe that also wanted to get me some stuff, they told me to make another one with Amazon because it was so much better for me too. A wide varieties of nice stuff, The policiy is not as strict as the others...May God bless ur Family...remember to relax & push ;)

Congratulations! I would recommend Buy Buy Baby. I have a girlfriend who is pregnant and she has been shopping for the "big stuff" (i.e. crib(s) (twins!), stroller, car seats, etc.) and she said you cannot beat Buy Buy Baby for quality options. They had seen this uber-expensive stroller in Norway that her husband just has to have. Buy Buy Baby is the only place that carries it. It's the best stroller out there supposedly. Guys will be guys I guess ;) Anyhow, I hope that helps!

Congratulations! I think Buy Buy Baby has the best, friendliest staff and best registry policies. Babies 'R Us will take things back without a problem, but only if they're on your registry and I've seen people get a zillion duplicates. Here in NY (Queens), I've never had a problem returning anything to Target for store credit, receipt or not, but a lot of people have complained about the registry update issue. Both Buy Buy Baby and Babies 'R Us make it really easy to find items on your registry. I love Amazon.com but I have no experience with using their registries, but, if you will have any older guests, it's probably wise to have an in-store registry.

yay - congrats, again! lol ;) you've rcv'd great advice so far - i would probably lean toward amazonbaby as they update the lists pretty well from what i've experienced, but perhaps like ali said, if there's a "local place" you could get away with at all, i'd do that too just in case you do have people who either aren't comfortable with shopping online or who just prefer a more unique gift-giving option. *happy for you* :)
