Model Citizens

Oct 12, 2009 in Style and Fashion
Ok, I never post or blog about fashion but now I'm going to put my two cents in about the fashion/model industry. I understand that models often starve themselves to fit the 'standards' of the industry. I also understand that many women on this earth are simply and naturally very slender.

The silly thing is that I don't necessarily have a problem with having thin models on the runway (unless there is an underlying and harmful issue such as an eating disorder); the problem that I have is that there are so few bigger sized models.

Just as there are many thin women in the world, there are a great many bigger women, too. When these women look at pictures from a fashion show or a catwalk, they can't really see a variety of body shapes and sizes showcasing possible clothing options or ideas for the season. They see tiny tiny tiny and are disheartened, disgusted (with the narrow-minded designer, not necessarily the models), and/or pressured to become as thin. It's ridiculous. It's like these women don't even count in the eyes of designers.

Something is rotten in the state of fashion. Of course there are the people who say that women see those images and think 'oh, if I buy those jeans I can be as sexy as the model in the picture!'. Sorry to shatter the illusion prided by so many market experts but no one can be as 'sexy' in the same way as the woman in the picture because photoshop doesn't exist in reality. You can't suck away or tone 20 pounds of torso/arm/butt matter in 5 seconds without consequences in the real world. That crap costs serious money and scars and starts with L and ends with -iposuction.

Ok, rant over. Happy Halloween! :)
