Fondue It!

Great Party Fondue
Rachael Ray 1-1/2-Quart...
Hello everyone..
Soo my lastest obsession is fondue. I've gone to the Melting Pot Restaurant before and it was good but soo expensive so I want to have my own fondue party some day. I have never tried making it yet but I've been reading about it for a while now. I just won the fondue set on the left (vintage) from ebay and I'm thinking about getting the one on the right (Rachael Ray) also, because I've read its good to have more than one pot if you plan on having a party, one can be used for the main course and one for dessert. I'm thinking a cheese one to dip bread and veggies in followed by a chocolate one to dip strawberries and other fruits, maybe pound cake and/or brownies, and marshmallows in. I also bought the great party fondues cookbook and hopefully that will have some fun recipes. Anyways, I was just wondering, what are your experiences with fondue?? Do you have any stories about it or advice? Thanks so much!

UPDATE: I have actually decided against the Rachael Ray pot and instead bought the Trudeau Electric 3 in 1 Fondue 11 Piece Set because it got such good reviews and I like the fact that I don't have to fool with keeping a flame lit and I like that it is made for all 3 types of fondue. Also, I'm not sure if I will be getting the vintage one, as the seller has not communicated with me..we will see what happens with that :\
My fondue cookbook came in the mail and it looks great, tons of recipes I want to try!

Agreed! I love fondue also! Chocolate, cheese, everything! Did I mention chocolate? ;)

Fondue is great, my Mom had a fondue pot when i was growing up. It's so much fun, and REALLY yummy! I'm sure Rachel Rae has lots of great tips. -^_^-

Ahh! I went to Melting Pot once, it was aaaaamzing! I've been wanting to get a fondue pot for a while now.

when my mom got married in the early seventies, fondue was really in. she recieved like three fondue pots! she still has one of them. its a really cool tacky green color.
when my family does fondue, its usually a cheese and meat one. (i don't know how my mom makes the melted cheese, its a mix of white wine and three cheeses one being jarlsburg). we usually have one pot for cheese, and one for the oil. for the meats we usually serve cubed chicken and beef and shrimp. we make a tempura batter that people can put onto their onions or mushrooms or chicken to make nuggets or whatever combo. i've never actually been to the melting pot, though i'd like to go. its really easy to do at home, its mainly prep, chopping all the food.

oh, and its best to give everyone at least two fondue forks if you are doing the raw meats thing cause you don't want to contaminate the cheese, and so people can cook more things at once. my moms forks are color coded, which also keeps the confusion to a minimal.

I've never had fondue (can you believe???) Now after reading your blog I'm thinking I should try it! It sounds fun! I'm planning a dinner party in my head as I type this:) Thank you for sharing!!! xo

in my French class, we have fondue parties every winter. in addition to strawberries/other fruit, we have pretzels. it's really good :]

I have never made fondue but it sounds really delicious. I hope your party is a big success. You'll have to tell us how it went in a future blog entry.

Oh how I LOVE fondue! We have a nice fondue pot and we make it as a special every once and a while. Usually you can buy a mix and you just melt it and add white wine, but sometimes my mom makes it and its soooo amazing! Its a mix of Emmantal and Greyure. Nom! I have never done meat or dessert but it sounds fun! And you gotta have the color coded fork thingys, and thats fun too. I hope you party is fun, of course it will be cause its FONDUE!!

thanks all!

Fondue is yummy! Some people make a pot of hot oil and cook meat and veggies, too. But cheese is definitely my favorite. A nice thing to do is have more than one kind of cheese.

I was just married in the early seventies and I too had several fondue pots....they came with the color coded fondue forks...and I had one that was that greenish color...I forgot what we called that color...but EVERYTHING was that color....every appliance I owned. LOL. I like fondue best for dessert....chocolate or caramel with fruit. Great blog.

I had fondue at my apartment-warming party a few years ago. (Any excuse for a party, right?). Anyways, the cheese one was hard to keep up the consistency. Perhaps it was the burner I used (I forget what those canned burners are called). But despite that, I still love using the fondue set, especially with chocolate!

I LOVE FONDUE! I made it at home once and my poor party guests were waiting for about 3 hours to eat because the cheese took forever to heat.

i never heard of doing caramel for the dessert portion, that sounds yum!

my parents had this god awful dingy mustard yellow color for the fridge and washer/dryer in the seventies. i think the green would have been a much better choice.

@stellastylista ~ oh goodness, what kind of pot and burner were you using?

I'm going to have to dig out the pot I bought last year and actually try it! Let us know how your experience goes.

I have never done fondue, but one of my friends mother's makes this yummy cheese dip, but in a crockpot. The crockpot seems to do a great job of keeping it just right. I have to find it (the recipe) and post it.

@lamerchick ~ ooh yes please do post it :) crock pot is a good idea.

You can make lots (I highly recommend) and refrigerate it and reheat it in the microwave, too. I guess you can leave out the sausage if you don't eat meat, too.

@lamerchick ~ thanks!!

You're so welcome. Enjoy. Be careful, it's *real* easy to eat too much. :)

@jennic haha I'm not sure, the regular stove I think. All I know is I had to wait a certain amount of time before adding in ingredients and it just took way longer than I had anticipated. I'm not giving up, though. Pass along any good recipes you have!

ive never made fondue ha

Hmm.. I love chocolate fondue with marshmallows or strawberry. so yummy.. ^^

I've been thinking about a fondue party too! Now that summer has rolled around for me there's much more time for me to plan things. Let me know how Rachel Rays fondue pot goes

love fondue! and a fondue party sounds like a great idea! :)

I love fondue! If you don't have enough pots but have an electric skillet or wok, they are good for meat. I like to fill a deep electric skillet with a broth mixture since it won't spit like oil will and use tongs to dump the meat in and just stab out the piece that I'd like. I also like crock pots for chocolate or carmel because everyone can dig in at the same time. I know that they aren't as romantic as the little pots, but for parties you don't feel like you're waiting forever for someone to take their turn and it is much easier to fish out lost pieces of food. Mmmmm, getting hungry now!
